I am falling in love with my chickens!! Someone help me!!

As I was driving to work today, I was thinking about them. At work I began to wonder if they would get bored while we are away. One our way home, the kids and I were discussing them and sharing funny stories about them. When we got home, we all rushed to the brooder to visit them. Ahhhhh!

We have 4 chicks and they're 5 weeks old today. I am very surprised that I am so infatuated with chickens! I am a city girl who has never had pets before. Now I have three boys and a husband who are all madly in love with these four chickie babes.

Haha! Who woulda thought?

Thanks so much to all of you. I know you will understand how I feel.

I lived my whole life in the city, too. When I moved to the country and got chickens and ducks and goats, I was amazed at how strong my feelings were for them. When my goat died of polio, I kept telling myself - she's just a goat- but I cried and cried anyway. I still miss her.

I remember the first time my bantam rooster got jealous watching me hold another chicken, and flew up onto my shoulder to claim me. They are endearing creatures.

I would also find myself in the parking lot at work after a rain, wondering if there was any way to discretely gather up all those worms that were going to waste- my chooks would love them. Oh, yeah, I would walk around the yard picking up rocks and digging holes looking for treats for them - they would all crowd around the edge of the pen watching me.

I loved my chickens. Enjoy yours.

I am so glad I'm not alone. It's wonderful to finally bond with an animal. Woo Hoo!

Here is one of my sons with our chickens. This is one of our favorite pastimes - letting them climb all over us!

So, you're suggesting they are roosters and not pullets?
Or that they are older than 5 weeks?

If they are roosters, we will be devastated as we cannot legally keep roosters in our area.

Does the breed have anything to do with their combs??
We were told the brown chickens are Gingerhams and the white ones are White Leghorn/New Hampshire cross. But the white girls have black spots and Bert has very black legs, so that makes me think maybe Australorp instead of New Hampshire. But I know absolutely nothing about chicken breeds.

I'm not sure who is cuter, the chicks or your son, so sweet!!

It's so true about chicken love, its hard for people who have never spent time with them to understand, but they are really such endearing little things, so curious and friendly. It's great that you have the whole family involved, the more you handle and play with them when they are young, the friendlier they'll be as adults. Chicken friends UNITE!
