OH BOY! I am falling in love....

Jen71, the expression on your son's face is precious! And redux, that is REALLY funny about the worms......discrete....haha.

Yes, chickens are sweet pets. Right now I can't wait to get home to the brooder to watch their goofy antics: Jumping, flying, playing keep-away with pine shavings, perching, etc. Chicken TV is just the best!

Enjoy!

Yes! That is so funny. I can just picture you, Redux, crawling around the parking lot picking up worms. Haha!
I guess its funny because I can see myself doing the same thing.

Our chickens have got it good, don't they?

I'm so glad my husband suggested we get chooks as pets. I had never considered it, but here in Australia, lots of people used to have a few chooks in the backyard (in the 1960s-70s). He remembers all of his friends having chickens and thats where the idea came from for our new pets.
So much fun!

Glad you are loving your chickies! They are adorable and your son looks delighted! I know what you mean about watching them--they are waaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyy more entertaining than the boob tube! I find myself wondering what they will do next! I have 3--they are 3 weeks old--and had 2 of them on my lap. The 3rd one, who is won't yet come running when I put my hand in the cage, wanted to be with the other 2 so bad that she flew up on top of the water bottle! I had to pick her up then--it was tooooooo cute!

Thanks everyone!
Today my chickens have to stay in their brooder all day. They are NOT happy about it and they're letting me know with the wildest squawking I've heard since they were tiny chicks. Hahaha!
Each morning, I let them out of the brooder into a giant playpen area for them to roam around and play all day while we are at work and school. But I am having minor surgery today and we're having our house cleaned. There's way too much going on here. So the messy chickens need to stay confined for one day. I've added a few cool things to the brooder to keep them occupied today, but they're not interested yet. They're determined to get the message across that they want to come out to play!

I think its fantastic they can communicate so well.
Ah, so much to learn!

Lisa - oh no. Seems like that happens to a lot of people. They think they're getting pullets and a few roos sneak in there.
I hope for your sake they all turn out to be pullets. If you're in doubt, post some pics in the "what breed or gender is this?" forum. Those guys are fantastic and they'll help you sort the girls from the boys.

Oh wow, these girls are growing FAST! They're 6 weeks old now and they just keep getting bigger and bigger.
I mean, I knew that was going to happen, but it seems like they grow right before my eyes.

Yesterday we took them outside to free range for the first time. I was so worried it would be hard to catch them when it was time to go inside, but it wasn't too bad at all. They're still very cautious and although they loved exploring our backyard, they were very easy to gather up and return to the brooder.

It was just wonderful and relaxing to sit in the sunshine, sipping my coffee, watching the girls free range around the yard.

Do you ever find yourself wondering why more people don't have chickens as pets? I can't see any drawbacks.
