I am 20 and a (somewhat) stay-at-home college student (music major). I've checked in to this site many a time and finally joined, due to upcoming circumstances.

We will finally be moving to our own property by this summer. My mother would like to keep bees, alpacas, and...yes!...chickens! Personally, I have always had an interest in poultry. When I was quite young, every spring without fail I would suffer through an unquenchable urge to raise something out of an egg. It would dominate my thoughts -- this primal, exquisitely powerful (and somewhat odd) maternal urge, manifesting itself in an 8 year-old. One year when we were living out in the country more or less, the parental unit relented and allowed me to take home one (!) little buff bantie pullet from the feed store (an act which really seemed to confuse the girl working behind the counter). Her name was Ethel. She would sit on my head and I often took (carried) her on walks. My supreme wish was fulfilled.

After a year or so with her, she began acting strangely, as lone chickens are wont...so I gave her to a friend of a friend, and she assimilated quite well into that lady's flock for the remainder of her days (she became Boss Hen apparently). The stint with my beloved and charmingly tame Ethel had cured the Urge, but I have never lost my love for chickens.

So one can imagine my excitement at the prospect of keeping an actual flock of our own. Nope, they won't be able to ship me off to a dorm that easily now (at least not long-term)...I would miss the animals too much.

We have just fallen in love with the fresh, wholesome goodness of domestic eggs, thanks to a family friend who keeps chickens and often has more than she can consume by herself. It'll be lovely having our own supply, as well as meat should the occasion arise.

At this point in time, we are looking into wyandottes, polish (just because they're awesome), and brahmas. And possibly a pair of geese or ducks, unsure of the breed.

Our other family members consist of two cats; one mutt dog; one planted ten gallon tank and it's sole inhabitant, Otto the bettafish (and various aquatic plants which are not very happy with me atm); one brazilian rainbow boa we have had for coming on 10 years now (such a gentl'man he is); one green cheek conure; and one horse, a sweet Spanish Arabian mare, and possibly a Fjord gelding in the near future. My hobbies include sculpting, sketching, amateur prop making (for Halloween), and growing fungi.

Looking forward to learning more about the wonderful world of poultry...and of course chatting with everyone.

lol, yes, what can I say...at one point I was lugging around about eight plastic white and brown eggs. I don't have any desire for children of my own...perhaps I have since worn out all my "broodiness".

Thank you for the welcomes.
