Oh man... I think I just got a virus on our new computer!

Quote:
It popped up in a Windows Message and it downloaded their antivirus software on my computer. I downloaded the free AVG software and it said I didnt have any viruses so I think this is fake. How do I delete the software that was downloaded onto my computer? I went to my delete/remove programs section and its not showing up.

Most new systems also have a built-in backup feature to back-up critical files. If not a new Mac, you probably have Vista which does have a back-up utility. Backing-up files is necessary in cases where you lose data or where you essentially have to restore a factory version of an operating system.

There are free online scans offered by most of the major software vendors such as Norton, Panda. If the price is not a deterent, Norton 360 works well on a new PC and has an automated backup process on their server.

There may not have been a download at all. I have to research a bit to see if Active-X applications show up in the Windows add/remove utility. In general, removing a program that does not show up there is not a straightforward task.

I saw something like that not too long ago while on Farmtown. Its a fake virus/spyware thing that is only in your temp files. I don't think it really downloaded anything. I closed my browser and reopened it and nothings wrong with my computer.
