I nearly had the same prob. except I was setting up a coop for chicks and roosters a friend was going to give me except it was a stray dog luckily enough before it came any closer Linda my Tibetan terrier came in and chased it away a medium sized dog like that can be scary when angry. But, carry some sort of fire arm with you a pistol should be okay. and if you want some sort of guard dog I would go with a Border Collie I mean you could go with a German shepherd like my friend but I wouldn't trust it around the coop.

My father climbed into the loft above my coop to see if he could shoot that dumb 'yote. Not a sign or hair of the pesky varmit.

I'll nail the hides of any animal that thinks that my coop is a KFC. And I MEAN that!!!!!!

Oh my gosh!!!! Are those Coyotes getting bold!!!! My neighbor was concerned when she spotted a coyote out in the field in the by the edge of the garden distracting my dog Blackie while the other one was out by the coop looking for a meal on Wensday night while I was at church. She was more than halfway down the hill before it ran off into the woods with it's friend. I'm thinking that they're mates with pups back in the woods. Trying to find an easy source of food to feed them.

If it comes down to it try and shoot the male. If she's got pups they may not be weaned and no animals deserves to starve to death. I'd suggest a trap first, that way you could see if she's nursing. Yeah I know, fry me, but that's the way it is. I deal with coyotes every single day here, and I still wouldn't shoot a nursing mother. Have you tried calling the Fish and Game dept. to see about trapping and relocating, they are the only ones who can legally relocate a predator.

Personally I would prefer to shoot them both. I don't like to starve anything either but if they do have pups back in the woods their going to bring them to my coop to show where they can get an easy meal instead of going after mice and rabbits back in the woods. There are SO many rabbits. I need to buy or borrow a pair of beagles to weed them out. I also REALLY need a Great Pryenees or 2 dogs to keep them coyotes at bay. Blackie is 12 or 13 years old. She can't handle 2 of them at the same time. They kill her for sure!!!

The coyotes I have encountered are very timid, and will flee at the first sign of you. My guess is if the coyote was that brave something could be wrong with it, possibly even rabies. Non the less it was not afraid you, and this is bad. Be very careful, and I would say it needs to be dispatched.

I have also heard of coyotes breeding with domestic dogs and when this happens their offspring might loose some of their fear of people. Another situation that you dont want. Good Luck!
