I'm always taken aback when I encounter a snake unexpectedly. I do love having them around though. I try to put any snake I don't recognize into a terrarium till I can identify it. We have about 6 or 7 species that are fairly common but a lot more that I can't name immediately.
I've spent my long life in the woods and waterways. I've never been bitten by a snake and wouldn't harm one, but they can be startling.
