I am a teacher and our eggs started hatching yesterday. Well early this morning before I came to school one must of hatched and there is blood all over the left corner on the incubator. The little chick looks exhausted and is laying down. I can not tell what if anything is wrong and I have other eggs that have pipped so I don't want to open the incubator. What should I do?

It probably got hurt coming out of the egg. I'm not sure but my mother raised some eggs and one did that then it died a few day's later. Just keep a close eye on it. It might have also had a hard time coming out of the egg and that's why it is laying down. Like I said before just keep a close eye on it. Good luck with it!

If it is not too much blood it is probably just the blood from the umbilical cord, which is normal. But if it seems like there is a lot of blood the chick may have cut its self on the shell during hatching. If so I would take it out carefully, and use a damp paper towel to dab it dry. It should be just normal though. As far as looking exhausted it is perfectly normal for them to be exhausted for a few hours after hatching. They will just lay down and sleep for about 3 or so hours after hatching. Just leave them alone during this time so they can regain their energy. It should perk up soon though!

Hope this helps and in not to confusing,
