I went out tonight to let my birds out for a few and noticed what looked a little like dirt on my turkey's back. Upon closer inspection it was tinged red. I lifted up her wing and there is about a six inch section where the skin is gone and gaping down. I couldn't tell if there was a hole at the bottom or not and she wasn't exactly cooperating. I sprayed some antibiotic spray on it but what do I do? She was walking around ok and eating. I'm devesasted. This is my BBW that I have owned for two years. I can only assume the stupid tom did this to her. How did this happen? What do I do? Should I seperate them? I really don't have a way to seperate them but could put one of them in a large dog crate. Should I put her in it? HELP!

i dont know what to tell you really, is the tom usually aggressive toward her? ive never had this issue, but i suppose if he is maybe seperate them.. someone else with more advice will chime in soon im sure!

No they aren't really aggressive, every once in a while they have a tiff but have never had this happen, I have owned him for a year. He has been trying to breed her. Could he have clawed her while breeding? I guess more importantly I need to know what to do for her.

I have had some pretty deep large breeding wounds compleatly heal. Just put her where she is away from the boys and keep it clean.

Ok I will take her out and put her in my large dog crate. It's hard to get to see the wound, should I try to wash it out by rinsing it or something? I have to admit, it wigged me out to look at it. I can deal with wounded dogs and horses but this just horrified me.

it's just from breeding not agressiveness. You need to seperate her until it heals completely and then put a saddle on her when you put her back in with the tom. I have had chickens with half their side peeled off heal completely with just spray on antibiotic, but if it was a big bird that meant something to me I would attempt to stitch it up a bit.

Honestly I don't know when it happened, isn't there a window of time for stitching? I have to be honest there is no way that I could stitch it up on my own. *sigh* I was at work all day so it could have happened this today or yesterday because it was rainiing and I didn't let them out last night. When I feed in the morning she was in the house "talking" so I just assumed she was ok. Tonight she came out and walked around and ate.
