Oh No!!!

I have 8 laying hens in quarantine yet & today after I cleaned their cage & put in more fresh straw, I sprinkled some Stall Dry around & they started pecking at it?

I think they were eating it! Isn't that bad? What's going to happen to them? Why would they want to peck at it & eat it? They have not done this before.

I feed them the 16% layer crumbles & for a treat they get bread & scrambled eggs.

Is this their way of asking for grit?

do they not have access to grit at all or do they free range at all?

Mine always have grit and oyster shell at all times - they are in a 10 X 10 (or is it 12X12??

) dog pen but they also free range for a few hours a day (under my supervision ....hawks are around us).

I dont use the Stall Dry so I dont know if its bad for them or not, but I say give them some grit if they dont have any.

Many people use stall dri, so you can pretty much guarantee their chickens peck and eat it. If it's made with DE, it should help them.

It should not hurt them but I am not sure about stall dry...I know stall dri and Sweet PDZ will not hurt them. It is maninly DE.

Each time I clean up the coop poop I cover all surfaces with sweet pdz powder. I do this when they're outside free ranging because I'd worry about them inhaling the dust, although I'm careful to sprinkle as dust free as possible. I've been doing this all year and my birds are as healthy as can be. I like the powder better than granule because it seem less slippery for them to walk on. I put it on the board under their roost and the floor and the roost itself. Also...poop is less likely to stick to the surfaces. Kind of like flouring the cake pan

I use granular sweet PDZ as I don't like the how the powder hangs in the air. My girls will sometimes peck at it when I spread it but it doesn't seem to bother them.

I hope they are tomorrow morning. I guess I shouldn't worry about it.
