So this afternoon I noticed two loose dogs near our property. This is not an unusual occurance here unfortunately, I checked on our chickens and everything was fine so I left for an appointment that I was already running late for. When we got home about 1.5 hours later my kids were sitting at the kitchen table and saw the same two dogs in our yard headed up in the direction of the chicken coop. My husband went outside with his gun loaded with rat shot. He fired off a couple of rounds but didn't come back so after about 5 minutes I got a little worried and went out to check if everything was ok. He said that the two dogs were a mother and a puppy and that when he fired off the shot the mother took off but the puppy got tangled up in the corner of an old fence at the edge of the property. It was afraid to move so hubby had backed off hoping it would run out and follow mama on home. This didn't happen.

The poor thing has no idea where to go, it is very friendly.. a little timid but very sweet. It came over and sat by hubby after it got over being scared, just sat staring up at him grinning and wagging his tail. Hubby and I then got into a little disagreement because I felt like it was his fault that the poor thing was now lost from its parent who was helping it survive and I felt we were responsible to think of something to do. He thought that we should just leave it alone and let it wander away.

I had to leave to take the kids to a dance and a sleepover so when I came back it was gone. I was still very disappointed in him, I don't know what the right thing to do is but just leaving it to fend for itself doesn't sit right with me. I was surprised at him too because he is an animal lover, especially dogs and I know it was bothering him but he wasn't going to do anything about it.

So... after a couple of hours I get ready to go pick my daughter up from the dance and tell our dog he can ride with me. We go outside and he goes barrelling after something chasing it around the truck.... the puppy, scared to death huddled against the wheel of the truck. So now hubby comes out and the puppy comes running over to him and sits down on hubby's feet tail wagging. I hear "Oh God, it is smiling at me" So now the puppy is warm in a crate at our house, and we still don't know what to do about it. Looks like I am a new foster parent...

oh and he investigated around the chicken coop, was not even slightly interested in the chickens but thought the poop smelled lovely!

Id say he picked your hubby as his new dad & you should keep him, but if you want to, if his mom comes back I would let him out to see her & see what happens...of course if I was in your situation I would keep both

He is soooo sweet though. He hasn't made a peep in the crate, you wouldn't even know he was in there until you look his way and start hearing thump, thump, thump ... cause as soon as you look at him his tail starts waggin.

Here he is. Not the best pics, but best I can do for tonight.

he is adorable....chances are mom and pup are strays. meaning even if mom comes back they will have nowhere to go but wander the roads, unless they got out from a nearby home. mom will come back seeking her pup at least once or twice she will retrace her steps and sniff him out to try and find it. but he looks mighty healthy, so I would keep an eye out for missing posts. otherwise I know I would keep him, the pup chose your hubby for a reason :-)

We are going to post up some signs tomorrow, just in case someone might claim him. It looks like he might have had a colar on at some point but neither dog had one on right now. He is very healthy looking, not plump by any means but certainly not thin. I told my daughter to keep an eye out for mom. I am pretty sure that he had never been inside before, he wouldn't come up the stairs to the porch and he didn't have any idea what to do when he was inside, he just came over to hubby and leaned into him. He was shivering when we found him again, it is freezing out tonight... I can't imagine what the poor thing would have done by himself in the cold if we hadn't taken him in. I just have never seen a puppy this calm, he is so quiet and zen-like. LOL! He is the exact opposite of our dog who was a land shark at that age, a tornado with teeth. Thus the name Riot.

IF we name this dog, it is going to have to be a calm name... something peaceful.
