OHHHH For the LOVE OF MUD and STENCH!

I don't miss flies... we had them by the bucket full in Georgia. And gnats, you want to talk about evil, vile creatures let's have a conversation about gnats while a few dozen of them are trying to crawl in your eyes, ears, up your nose, and in your mouth.

Maybe I need to go buy some of those cute muck boots... my chicken's run was a giant mud puddle this last weekend and the boot scraper had a time trying to get my sneakers clean.

For drainage... Use some 1.5 to 2 inch rock, a lot of places call it cobble, then try some pea gravel or concrete sand on top of that if you still have problems. It will compact a bit if you add concrete sand, so plants will have a harder time growing in it but hopefully it will drain the water off a bit. Of course if it sits in a low part of the yard... it won't do much. Matter of fact if your whole yard sits kinda low, you're really just out of luck.
