That's what the articles all seem to suggest.

Two thoughts - don't tell my husband, or else we'll have to have these things too. I'm still getting warmed up to the Turkens.

and, All though I find this thing....ummm, unappealing, it reminds me of that poem.....Fuzzy wuzzy was a bear, fuzzy wuzzy had no hair. Fuzzy wuzzy wasn't fuzzy was he?

I believe you meant to say "torture."

Can you tell me how this bird being featherless, is any more torturous than a silkie having silkied feathers that do NOT protect it against the elements, are a hazard when it rains and have crests that are so poofy that the bird cannot see?

Im not saying them being bald is *torture im saying that scientist testing and mutating chickens is torture/wrong. but that is my opinion.

Again, I see no difference between the silkie mutation and the featherless mutation.

There is no testing going on with these birds other than the selection for the featherless gene. The SAME type of "testing" that brought about silkies or any other breed or breeding program.

Aka Selective Breeding

How on earth would creating featherless chickens torture them? Exposing these birds to sun might torture them, I agree, but I doubt these people would be silly enough to do that.

Not only do silkies have these problems, they have a skull defect, by definition, a hole in the skull, as I understand it, never a good thing, and apparently they cannot see well without some human trimming.

I don't want any silkies or any featherless chickens. But would probably choose featherless for meat over silkies.

I still think this is kind of wrong. I know they are breeded for meat but......

is heart breaking for me, I love the soft and bright colors of chicken's feathers

Just imagine if we were totally hairless (no body or facial hair, bald)

Selective breeding is debatable, for a lot of reasons. But to call it torture is, frankly, a bit silly, IMHO. Animals kept for selective breeding are not typically treated badly, they are typically treated well, as any other scenario would alter the results.

As for "mutating chickens," chickens today are already a series of mutations. There are only two or three wild birds that were bred to become what we now think of as chickens. They really don't mind being bred, I promise you.

Breeders do not mutate chickens, they select for desirable or undesirable mutations. What do you perceive as the process of mutating chickens, or any other animal, for that matter?

But then, I love my soft and furry kitty cats and love to pet them and nuzzle their fur.....and there are some who absolutely adore the hairless cats. They ARE pretty cool looking.

So, while one person values the wonderful, soft feathers, another may value the bald look. As long as these guys aren't being left out in direct sunlight and burned to a crisp, it isn't cruel. My kids aren't covered in fur or feathers and they do just fine when it is sunny because I don't leave them out in it.
