Ohiki Chicken Thread

Pics
Fly-tie birds have short tails.and long saddles. The birds she has came from me through Jerry and then eggs from her. She is a good breeder. I think the one with the white head will be a barred bird. Most barr birds are black with a white dot on head. Fly-tie birds most have a white head. They look more Ohiki than anything. I like them. The barred cock is real pretty..

He is very pretty! I don't usually like the fly tie crosses but that looks very elegant.

I haven't seen many pictures of them, but I love the ones Amanda has pictured in her ad. Especially that black and white rooster. I saw your rooster pictured in this thread, he looks really good to me. Do you have any more recent pictures of him? I'm going to post more of the other ones I have. I tried to get more pictures today, but didn't get anything worth posting. The chickens were not cooperating.

This rooster is from Amanda's Flytie/Ohiki eggs that hatched at the end of April. He is one of two whose tails grew really long, really fast compared to the others. Is that the Flytie influence? The others I'm thinking are developing more like Ohikis, which if I'm understanding correctly, take longer to develop length. Does that vary much? The ones with slower growing tails look like they have more Ohiki "type" to me. This boys tail is carried a bit lower than the more Ohiki type birds and his saddle feathers already drag on the ground. I think he is just stunning.

This is Tchaikovsky or Tchai for short

Stunning.. I am so glad they have turned out so well.. I love my crele ohiki/flyties.. Also, I had a chick that hatched out like the one you had pictured. It's body was black and head white, then when it got feathered out totally, It was black bodied with golden hackles area.. Very interesting.. I loved the color though. There are many odd chick down patterns in the ohiki.. I even ended up with one that was from the original stock that looked millie.. Odd indeed but very beautiful..

Treatsrule,
you pretty much said the correct answers in your post. Like Toni- Marie said, the fly tie genes are just for very nice thin saddles, doesnt really add lenght to the birds. And yes most ohiki are slow to feather out. Those generally will be your better birds. Those that start out strong and fast as cockerels, then stop. That's usually all they ever get from what I've seen. Those slower feathering , males I bet after next molt will be your better birds. Usually into their second year before you can really start to tell. The barred roo does look nice though

I thought the fly tie birds had shorter tails, but then I can't figure out why these birds have longer tails than the younger Ohiki roos seem to get. Of course I'm just trying to go by what I see online. Seems like more of a Phoenix type influence maybe? I'll post some pictures of the other type that hatched at the same time.

I'm really excited to see how these young ones turn out. I have one hen that is solid black, black skin too, with the softest feathers. One of the chicks has the dark skin and I'm crossing my fingers its a black rooster or hen. I don't care which. I just know I want a pen bursting with them

I have one bad picture of the hen, I'll try to take one tomorrow that does her justice to share with you.

Silver ginger would be lovely! I was thinking they would likely be wheaten, but I"m just learning.

The fly tie lines actually have some Bantam phoenix in them. That explains the tail growth.. I merged some blood in to make the tails longer. I really like full curtains. I plan on breeding them back to the more ohiki type.. So I made both crosses, some flytie/ohiki and some flytie/ohiki/phoenix.. I was hoping to get faster results on the tail growth.. This explains why they put tails on and not just saddles and the tails are so fantastic.. I used blood from a line of nonmolting bantams that originated from Cy stock.. Cockerel feathered bbred and blue red hens.. Here is a pic of the little one I had, a bit older than your chick, but you get the idea..

Thanks, I'm really pleased with him. I'll tell ya I can't wait to see what the other boys are going to do when they mature though. I have one of the slower growing fly tie crosses that seems very typey to me for an Ohiki, but with the thin saddle feathers and lots of them. I see potential when I look at him compared to the other roosters.

That chick is adorable!

OK so that explains it then. Does that mean that these faster growing tails may not be peaking yet due to the influence of the Pheonix traits and/or Cy's bloodline? The other fast growing fellow has what I think you would call a full curtain and of the two he is my keeper. He hops on my head when I'm in the pen with him so he's got the sentimentality edge over Tchai going for him! Tchai may be the better bird of the two, I don't know yet. Here is a picture of the other fast growing fellow, Friendly, he is the rooster in the back. The lovely young roo in front doesn't have a name yet

He is from the same hatch as Friendly and Tchai, but I don't know if he is one of the fly tie crosses or not.

blue cream in the back is the ohiki/flytie roo over a blue cream phoenix hen.. The front one will be bbred ohiki to flytie ohiki roo.. I personally love the flashy colors of these barred babies.. I have a large phoenix cockerel coming up who is a barred light golden duckwing very similar to the back rooster and with tons of multiple feathering.. Amazing the mixes you can get with combining.. I like the color on the first one.. he is not homozygous for barring.. Did you end up with any barred hens?
