I was sitting in the living room on byc and all of a sudden I hear a loud unhappy sound I have never heard from my girls before.
like a bachbach beeeeeegocc type and so ran out too see what was up and nothing was out of the ordinary. Although it freak my dd11 out just as much and she was in the coop where said chicken was before I could get there and said nothing was wrong that she saw.

So I monitored for a bit then said well if it happens again just watch and see what she does.

Well it just happened again and now a few others joined in the song.
There was nothing wrong and they were all fine and so I watched for a bit and then they quit and came over to get petted and beg for a treat lol.

Could this be the first indicator of the egg laying noise??? Or am I just wishfully thinking. Or is it something else entirely>>>
They are 4 mo old and a couple of them have very red combs and waddles. But other than that they are all fine. I have 12 BO girls (I think Lol) No crowing or anything lol....

Mine have learned to recognise the sound of a vehicle pulling into the driveway, and start a ruccus to get my attention. Maybe they're training you?

Yep, sounds like the egg song; some of mine do it before, some after, and some do it while another is laying.

My ladies got very loud about two weeks before they started laying - at about 4.5 months. They made these long, slow squawking noises - lots of noise. Also, when I would come near the oldest one, she started to squat - wings ruffled out, back end up, because she thought I was a rooster... (we don't have a rooster).
Then, I got the first egg - a double yolker and HUGE sitting all nice and pretty one morning in the nest box.
I would recommend putting some oyster shell in their nesting area to build up their calcium - even if they free range. It helps keep the egg shells nice and solid.

Mine do it when a bird flies over, or the wind rustles a tree branch, or a car drives by, or a dog barks, or another chicken is picking on another, or their is a rabbit in the yard, or if a plane flies over basicly ALL THE TIME!

I have RIR's. They love to announce when they have layed. Also I have some girls out on the roosts squawking to tell whoever in the preferred nest boxes to hurry up and get out so she can have a turn. They squawk in the mornings to let me know it's time for some treats. Come see us.

I recently retired. I was working the overnight shift. Every morning I would give the birds some treats when I came home from work before I would go to bed. They have me trained.
