My dad had gotten some EE chicks early in the year. He picked up a little EE cockerel a little later. It had gotten cocci so he lived in a plastic clothes basket till he was well. Often we carried him around while giving medication.

The problem now is that he is nearly half grown and is absolutely terrified of chickens. We reluctantly introduced him to the flock for several weeks and yesterday we could not find him.

He had climbed into the nest box and hid under the liner. So when we forced him from there he runs to the other side of the run and hides under a bush. The hens do not bother him that much. At feeding times he does a quick trot across the run grabs a mouthful of feed and runs to the other side.

When out there he walks under us like we are his mother hen.

So I put him in with much smaller chicks (D'uccles) and he ran from them and hides or sticks his head in the corner. So last we put him with my two small ducklings and when the two pulled his tail feather he screamed and hid in the corner.

He seems to only like people.

Any way to brazen him up a little? He is just too big to be babyish like this.

Poor guy, but you are right. It IS funny.

I don't have any wise words, but I will be watching to see what others have to offer. Do you have any hens that are fairly tame? Maybe one you can take into a smaller area by themselves for a bit each day to desensitize him to the evil hens?

Thanks Suziers. I have tried introducing him to one sweet hen. She tried to follow him and flock with him but, he screams whenever she got near and hid.

That is so funny. Just rase him by himself as a show rooster. Or, you could put him in a small pen on the edge of your large coop, so that he can be around the large chickens and not be pecked. Then , when he can tollerate the others, put him with the large flock. Or, Free range him with the other chickens.

If you free range I would put him out with the rest of the flock. I put some treat out for mine and they were more concerned with the treats. Let him hide. I think if the other birds aren't bothering him he will eventually come around.
