OK-I am officially very bad at this

I am now trying to find a home for yet another chicken who has turned out to be a roo. This is the third time this year (first time flock). Half of my chickens have turned out to be roos. UGH!

Anyone ever wonder if you are roo cursed? Am I condemned to sex linked chickens only with this luck of mine???!!!!

How big is your flock, do you just have a handful, or is it like 10 and 10, then I could understand that being too many to keep around... I got rid of my rooster last year, and I sure missed having it around for protection of my girls...i cant wait for my little ones to grow up and be the men of the coop...if there is any way you could keep it, or do you have to get rid of it because of the noise factor?

Understand your frustration though, if you just want girls for laying, and half of what you get is not going to do that job...

I bought 15 baby chicks...at 3 days old....7 turned out to be roos...I posted them in BYC, craigslist for sale for a solid month, nobody replied!.....

I posted them again this time cut price in 1/2, nothing...finally almost 2mos later...a lady took 6 of them and has them as pets.

I have a small backyard flock in the city. I currently have 6 chickens (which is about the size I want). I have two silkies, and I'm pretty sure one of them is also a roo. Not a problem, since his crowing is relatively quiet, and he is not aggressive towards me or the other girls. But my BR, although very sweet/not agressive, is a big boy with a loud crow (not cool for my poor neighbours).
Really frustrating.

Also-every time I have to find homes it is a bit of a chore, since I don't want them to end up in a stewpot!!

If you bought unsexed chicks, then statistically you are right on target with half being male. Not cursed at all. Or were you led to believe you bought pullets?

I bought straight run -- 16 chicks -- my first -- in April. Got 14 roos and 2 pullets, and one of the pullets hates "boy" chickens and the other jumped out in front of a car at about 12 weeks old -- Now, my roosters were handsome fellas and all of them found homes, but SHEESH!!! 14/16 on straight run! What a way to start!

Yes, I learned the hard way. No straight runs unless there is no other options.
Of course I have fond memories of staring down the flock and letting them know that the next one that crowed was dinner. We ate alot of chicken that year.

Wow. I'm a vegetarian, so that's so not an option for me.

But yes, I was led to believe they were pullets. Bummer.

Has anyone gone the sex linked route? I love my "cutie chickens", but some good egg layers would be nice. That's kind of the reason we started this whole thing!
