Ok I have a chick hatched now tell me why its

It has feed and water in the bator. It is able to get up. It is just sleeping on its back like a baby!! All sprawled out and comfortable!! Its wierd!! Anyway I will put it in the brooder when I get home. Someone told me to kill it because it may be something the other ones would catch and I dont want to do that!! She raises chicks alot but dosent care about them. They are just for food and whatever to her!!!! Its an adorable Buff cochin banty.

If it is sprawled and sleeping that is normal. If it can't roll over from its back it needs help.

Good luck on raising your chicks. Let us know how the rest ofyour hatch goes.

I am wondering, since a chicks lungs are located on their back isn't it dangerous for them to be on their backs for so long? I never had any actually sleep on their backs, they would hatch and fall over onto their backs but never stayed there. I am not being critical, I am only asking this question for future reference.

I have had a few to flop over and sleep that way but I always bumped them and woke them up and made them move LOL

I have a couple modern game bird chicks that love to sleep in their backs. makes me nervous every time i look in at them, lol.

I kept thinking it was dead!! It was too cute to watch it sleep that way. I could see it breathing. I hope it does ok in the brooder now. I will keep you up to date.

Chickens weren't meant to be on their backs at least not for long. Their respiration is depressed and if they can't get up then they will suffocate. As long as you get food and water to the chick it should be okay. I've helped plenty of chicks up, they aren't at their most coordinated when they hatch.

So, is putting them in your hand on the back not advised. We have one white EE that will fall asleep on its back in our hands. Are we wrong for doing that. (2-3 min tops)

A couple minutes doesn't hurt them, you're right they seem to relax well in that position. It's hours of not being upright that is dangerous
