Ok I'm going to go on a little rant here. Has to do with breeders.

Agreed! I believe it is okay to use a breeder's name if and only if you have their permission--and that would just be to let a buyer know what lines you are using. But once that bird has left their hands and you have started breeding their birds with other lines, it is no longer theirs and therefore shouldn't be labeled as their's. The pic shown in that auction looks nothing like a hattrick silkie and it's unfortunate(and offensive) their name gets thrown in there to make a quick buck.

I actually ran into someone awhile back that was trying to create a site where folks could get their poultry registered and one could have a pedigree. Not sure if it every got off the ground or not. Someday I may have to go back and check that out.

Also, in reading some of the follow up posts, I was reminded of something else that folks may find interesting. Just because someone happens to be well-known for having a particular "line" or "strain", doesn't necessarily guarante that one will get a "pure" line or strain from that breeder. I happen to know one very good breeder and somewhat well-known who was instrumental in getting a specific breed accepted by the APA - AND that particular breeder brought some hatchery chicks into his flock. He did so knowingly and in order to work on some specific issues.

Now doesn't that just throw a monkey wrench into some folks ideas and precepts of a breeder???

God Bless,

Yes. Well put. I guess it is not as important with Silkies, except she did say that "Polish" blood was an issue, so if you knew a line or a strain was carrying "Polish" that would be a reason to know the lineage.

With silkies, the only original variety was white--all other colours were bred in--usually using cochin and some polish, but other outcrosses have occurred, too. So if you are considering a non-white silkie--it was outcrossed at some point.

Type has changed over the years and silkie type is considerably closer to cochin than it was 30 or so years ago. Crests have grown larger, but the shape doesn't really resemble polish crests: silkie crests are much more neat and confined--even the messiest male crests do not have the Albert Einstein look of a polish.

If you say your bird is a certain line, I believe you are saying that it came from that breeders. If you say your birds came from that line, then you are saying that you have birds from that breeder or breeders, but that you bred the birds yourself. A great deal is HOW one says somehting and the intent.

The hookline that originally spawned this thread is merely an attention grabber--not completely accurate, but the truth was easily seen from the text listed on the actual auction. I wish all auctions posted photos--assuming the photos are the actual birds (and I do know that that has not always been the case--in my mind that is a bigger issue than throwing names around when there is at least some truth in the way the names are used)
