OK its finally happened...yep frozen water dish

If you use 'search' you will find a number of threads with various homemade waterer bases, and one of them involves basically a cinderblock with a lightbulb in the hole and a cookie sheet or some such thing on top on which you set the waterer. I do not think it is likely to be the most efficient design but it is probably not the worst either. check out the various homemade rigs, you may get some ideas.

For any homemade rig, make sure you THOROUGHLY test it to make sure nothing's getting so hot it could melt a plastic waterer or ignite dust; make SURE that spilled water isn't going to get onto a lightbulb or electrical connections; and for heaven's sake make certain it's plugged into a working GFCI outlet.

Good luck, have fun,

Pat

Goodness no! As long as you have good air quality (i.e. dry, not humid air), and no drafts right on the chickens, and intelligently-chosen chicken breeds, chickens are fine much colder than freezing
