The pen gets real muddy. They don't seem to mind but I do. Would it be worth while to get a hay bail or two to make a ground cover? Or would it be too much of a mess to clean up after a couple weeks?

Your best bet will be to filll it was sand so it doesnt collect water and can drain. Adding more organic materials will cause it to just get deeper in mud. Untill of course enough bulk builds up that water drains out.
