I havw tried it before with four eggs in cardboard box homemade incubator box.. and long behold one pipped thru and tried unzipping only problem is after 24 hours i tried helping it, which i think killed it. Long story short, I am trying it again and from what Im seeing, i have two viable eggs.. I have no hygrometer has anyone ever hatched successfully without hygrometer???

Is there a reason you can't buy a hygrometer? I'm sure people have successfully hatched without one before but you greatly increase your odds if you monitor the humidity.

A chick that is unable to complete the zipping process indicates you didn't have a high enough humidity in the incubator. The humidity needs to be kept at over 60% to avoid the membranes from drying out and shrink wrapping the chick.

Yes.. before I purchased aux meters, my LG hydro meter was a liar. I completely ignored it. It would read 78% RH while bone dry and egg less.

Geographic speaking now. I am in Florida. We have liquid air in the summer. I run my bators bone dry until late day 18 (chicken eggs) then add the hot tap water at lock down. Not even full, just to create mild steam. The condensation would lightly build in the viewing windows.. I stress the word lightly. IF IT STARTED TO BEAD, I siphoned a gradual amount of water out of the canals accordingly and wiped the glass. waited for the condensation to reappear.
WHAT A PAIN IN THE NECK....

THEN after 30/60 days of slaving away being tethered to the LG's, I bought a couple half way decent temp/hydro indoor/outdoor meters for less than $10 each.
MY HATCH RATE DOUBLED.. and piece of mind tripled.
Yes it is possible without one but with one is well worth the investment. I bought two to make sure they stay calibrated by having two readings..
Then I needed more brooder space..
good luck

I have never owned one and hatched chicks and ducks many times and had great success

Chickens hatch them all day long with no hygrometer. It doesn't have to be complicated to be successful. Hens get off the nest periodically and the eggs cool a little, some eggs get turned a lot some don't, the ones in the middle are warmer than the ones on the edge and a good broody hen can match our incubators.

Keep your eggs at temp, turn them so the embryo is exercised, set them in an egg carton with the air cell up on day 18 and add a bowl of water with a sponge it it also. Oh and keep your fingers out of the hatching process for the most part. That's a hard call to make. If they truly are stuck they're gonna die anyways and if they're not you've already experienced that outcome.
