This may be the stupidest question of all time but I had never thought of it since I really didn't have plans initially to breed turkeys ... but now I have an egg from a white holland and we want to breed her and get her a mate ... so,

do turkeys need nesting spots?
will they dig their own in the hay/straw/bedding?
will they use a nesting box like chickens do?

She reall won't start laying good until the spring. If she's in a pen, I use a medium doghouse with hay and some will use them. They will lay 15-20 egs before they start to sit.

My midget white laid eggs all last Winter? Weird..they were fertile to as alot of folks hatched out babies from them! She never used her nesting area I built and shoved her fat butt in the chickens nesting box every chance she got...I can't believe I didnt have to pull her out of it...or on the hay bails..She loved them!!!

Well, I kind of got an answer from my turkey today. She made her own nest in the corner of the coop covering herself in straw and wiggling around a lot until she had just the right depression. Usually she is the first one out of the coop in the morning but today she was in their for over an hour after the door was opened building on her nest. We know the eggs won't be fertile yet but we aren't planning on getting a male until after the first of the year.
