The mites cause irritation and the scales on the legs lift up. The post above mine shows severe cases (yuck). You'll see a difference in the scales in earlier phases b/c they'll be whiter & bumpier than normal. Normal scales lay down relatively flat are are the normal color you'd expect for that breed of chicken (black, blue, green, yellow, white, etc.).
