Ok what do I do? I'm afraid of what I might find.

safe hum level is about 65%

It could take 24 + hours.

What is your hum now ??

Low hum would cause the chick to stick.

We will have to get you some chicken hatching PROZAC, LOL!!!

When a friend asks me what to do after the eggs are out of the turner. This is my answer, you have two things you can do, 1. go fishing for three days, 2. go get drunk for three days. What ever DO NOT OPEN THE BATOR. Incubating eggs should be left to those that are laid back. Someone that can put the eggs in and for 18 days check the temp and humidity. On day 18 take the turner out kick up the humidity and leave the bator be. The more you mess with it, the more problems you will have.

How long will it usually take a chick to learn how to walk. This lil one is very wobbley. Hatched completly around 3 am. It's now 9:17am. Dry but some feathers matted on back area. One b.m. so far Dark green and white poop, is that normal? My hopes are not too too high. So tiny. any advice is very appreciated.

Yes, that technicolor dropping is perfectly normal. They expend alot of energy hatching. Just let the baby be. Occasionally a chick will hatch that has difficulties, but hopefully your baby is just exhausted!

This is a very stressful time. They look much better when they fluff up and start hopping around.

Agreed!! Takes them awhile to get going on those wobbly legs from just hatching. They sleep alot!

Sounds like it's behaving normally. Is he the only egg in the incubator? Keep him warm and keep an eye on him.

You do know that photos are mandatory here on BYC, right?

Well I know this is so 2 weeks ago, but I thought I would just stop by and say thank you for all the advice from ya'll during my "egg hatching in my junky homemade incubator" panic. So for those of you that wrote to me telling me to leave it alone, THANK YOU. My lil chicky poo is doing fine one week now, I thought for sure it wasnt going to turn out and lil did I know. I'm not sure If I had a boy or a girl but I dont care, if it keeps growing and doing good you can bet that it will be the happiest, fattest most spoiled rotten chicken on earth. It ended up hatching around 3 am and so I slept in the front room where I had the incubator and brooder in. Other than giving birth to my human babies I had never slept away from my hubby. I oh so politely said to him at bed time "I know this is gonna sound wierd but I'd really like to stay in the front room just in case the chick hatches in the middle of the night." He was like okay.....
So off I went and I just laid there listening to peeps of struggle ever few seconds. A couple of days after hatching my chick really had trouble walking and keeping eys open, so with a smidge of vitamins and antibiotics in the drinking water, it perked right up and really seems to be doing fine. As of right now with the brooder light on we dont keep the kitchen sink light on at night, hubby calls it he chicken lamp. Anyway thank you.

Congrats on the baby. Next time, just do vitamins. Antibiotics as a preventative is a bad thing. It can make it useless for when you really have infection. The chick inside the egg is sterile until it hatches. So as long as your brooder is fresh, it will slowly get exposed to bacteria and stuff that it needs to slowly gain immunities to survive, at a rate which is healthy. Antibiotics kill good and bad, and you want the 99.9% of the good bacteria to take over so the tiny bits of bad have no chance of being able to make the chick sick.
