Okay Doc, give it to me straight

April 2009-Adopted a hen and a rooster from animal rescue..decided that they were so cool I would get a "few" more

July 2009- I now have 43 chickens, 17 ducks, and 21 guineas.

Eggs are on the way.

Saw some silkies at the Comal County Fair last September and my daughter decided she wanted one. Figured we needed two, so they'd have company, but no roosters. Decided we might as well have a couple layers too, so we got two Australorps. We now have 1 Rooster, 10 hens, 2 pullets and 2 cockerels.

I only wanted a FEW Silkies. I have about 70 chickens now, and I just sold 20 within the past few days. I am getting burned out. It's soooo hot here and I feel really bad for my chickens, I have had 3 die because of the heat. They were also older chickens, but still. I am cutting way down, I only want like 20. I don't have a lot of time anyway and I am always out there with the chickens, love them dearly but!!!! Everyone keeps telling me to get ducks that they are less maintenance, I'm not sure I believe that.

Most people I've talked to have said ducks are a LOT messier, but the eggs are tastier!

calicokat- I love your avatar!! Did you make that?

Okay I find ONE common thread here..we all wanted "just a few chickens" and now we have waaaay more then we thought we were gonna get. I wonder if thats a BYC thing? We should make a shirt or bumper sticker that says 'chickens are like potatoe chips, you cant have just one!'
