Okay.....I did it..well WE did it

@GG...... I will butcher again, in fact I've ordered and received 50 cornish broilers from Ideal Poultry.....I didn't eat the meat the first time it was cooked which was two days afterwards but we did roast two chickens for Superbowl Sunday and it tasted so good. I've put it into perspective....I wish you so much luck. This meat is healthier than any hormoned full chicken meat I could buy from the supermarket. While my experience was....eye opening..... We will do it again and I'm sure I'll feel the same way as I did the first time. With this batch I'm trying not to pick out any differences in them to where I would get overly attached. They are less than a week old and boy can they eat already!!!!!!!! :). I hope this helps you!! :)

Yes! It has been a huge help. I think I want to try it at least. I think anyone owning chickens...or actually any animals WILL at some point HAVE to cull, put to sleep etc. I had to take our dog of 12 years in to be put to sleep...that is the hardest thing I have ever had to do. I figure butchering a chicken wouldn't be a big deal compared to that. And unless I am going to stop eating meat, something has been butchered for me to eat! Does the meat taste different than store bought? I do purchase organic chicken and beef most of the time...you want to talk about some $$$! How did the cost of raising them and purchasing from the grocery weigh out? I am a gardner and I get GREAT satifaction out of growing and eating my produce. I am hoping raising chickens for meat and eggs would give me the same satisfaction, however the tomato vine doesn't scream and jerk as I pull the tomato off the vine!! Thanks for all of your info and the good wishes!

Lol@ tomato!!!!! The meat was very fresh..... Honestly I have to get use to the freshness of it....go figure!!! Lol. I'm not sure in terms of pricing vs store bought. I'm sure it cost more to raise but for me, I didn't want hormones added to my meat.....so the cost wasn't a major factor in my starting to raise chickens.

I had to look at it as well in terms of I know I eat chickens and someone had to butcher and raise the ones I eat from the grocery store. I know I'm not turning vegetarian.

Oh one thing it does do to you, you will not want to waste food anymore....... Idont take that for granted. :)

No hormones, but there are plenty of other reasons to not eat factory farmed meat.

Granted, it only shows the WORST of factory farming, and pushes a vegan/animal rights agenda, but there are plenty of valid points as well. (BTW I'm all for humanely raised and slaughtered meat, and don't mind paying more for it.)

@halo..... I've had two different people, one person who raises chickens for a chicken company and the other who works for a chicken company tell me that they do add hormones to their chickens to help them grow faster.

Either they are wrong, or they are breaking the law. Federal law does not permit the use of added hormones in poultry or swine.

My money is on breaking the law.... I've read what you have read... I also know the USDA as well as FDA do not have the funds or manpower to regulate all foods imported in or visit these poultry houses as they should. Sad but true..... I'm glad there is a forum such as this do I can try to become self sustaining.
