I posted below about how I have to put our chicken coop and run on the sunken patio of our suburban house. Well, this isn't exactly the truth. We actually have a decent size yard (1/2 acre), but a local ordinance doesn't allow chickens on property our size (need 2 acres). I was going to put them on the patio and try to hide them from the neighbors (our yard is not fenced).

Well, this morning while watering the garden, I was looking at our nice, sunny yard and thinking that I'd really like to be able to move the chicken tractor around in the yard instead of hiding them down on the shady, sunken patio. While there is no fence, the back and one side of the yard have a lot of vegetation that creates a pretty good privacy barrier from the neighbors. So really only one neighbor would be able to see the chickens.

We rarely see these neighbors (they keep very different hours than us), so I emailed the husband to see if they would have any objection to us having chickens in our yard. I showed him a picture of the chicken tractor and told him it's pretty small, that I researched the chicken breed to get ones that are calm and good with kids (in case he's concerned because they have two little ones), told him that we're only getting three to four hens, and that we'll be very good about cleaning out the tractor. And also pointed out that they chicken will always be confined. I told him we'll be happy to share our fresh eggs, and to let us know if the chicken ever bother them in any way and we will do whatever we need to fix the problem.

That was about twelve hours ago and I haven't heard back. And now I'm wondering if it really is better to ask forgiveness than permission. I already spent a bunch of money on this chicken tractor, not to mention poured so much time into researching and have my heart set on doing this. I'll be sooooo upset if he says they have a problem with it. I wish he'd answer my email already!

I hope that they don't have a problem with it. But what I don't understand his mentality is that, what harm would hens do to kids that he's worried about ? I have 2 small children and 3 ducks, 4 roosters and 16 hens and they free range most of the time and I had NO PROBLEM what so ever !!! You are asking their permission

. I would of suggest that you get them first and see what happens, if they would of complain about it, then offer them some eggs

. But since you have already told him that you're already getting them, I would just get them

, that's it ! Don't worry for something that probably won't happen, get your chicks and enjoy them. 4 hens won't make so much sound nor smell.
I wish you best of luck.
