Okay--Kids are sick--Chick Question

Ok, I've been waiting for a post like this. Exactly one year ago when I got my Ducklings and Goslings I got diarehha and intestional cramping. was sick for a week. I wondered if it was Salmonella. This spring A few days after my chicks arrived I'm sick again for a week. It's just my husband and I as our son is 28 and on his own. My husband never became ill and never deals with the poultry, only me. I went to the doctor but by that time I was almost well so did not get a salmonella test done in time. I don't spend much time holding my birds but am constantly refilling waterers, feeders, Cleaned a lot of pasty butt though this spring. I have not been completly vigalant in washing my hands all the time, as figured that salmonella crap was a lot of hype. Now I'm not so sure. Next spring I will have a Salmonella test vial here in my bathroom cabinet in case this happens again and take it to the Doctors office promply. My gut feeling is that I did have Salmonella. But the truth will be in a lab test. My chicks came from Hoovers in Iowa. I don't know if they've had Salmonella issues there before or not.

when i hold my chicks or grown up ones and don't wash my hands i get sick.. stomach cramps and diarreha.. it last about 3 days then i am fine till i forget again.. it isn't bad enough to keep me home as long as a potty is near.. and i don't get it any other time only when i have held them.. i think some of us are more prone to get a tummy/ run thing than others.. it doesn't affect hubby but it sure does me lol

Thanks for the replies...I am on the fence...but I think it might be from the chicks because only my kids got sick...not me or my husband...I am an obsessive hand washer which is why I look like I have 90 year old hands a 34

I would have thought I would have gotten it since I change diapers a billion times a day especially with all the poops

So perhaps it is some mild intestinal thing from the chicks...and I agree some people are probably more prone that others to get sick from things...my son who has food allergies especially...here's to it passing soon!

I keep a spray bottle of bleach on the counter. Not only do we need to wash with antibacterial soap after touching and caring for poultry, but we also have to clean any area we touch or work around. BTW this is one of the few times I require antibacterials, even my "granola" DIL agrees with this course of action. I use her knowledge for information on environment because that is her area of expertise. She would never use antibacterials unless ABSOLUTELY necessary. In the case of poultry and children (anybody) it is necessary ie; door knobs, sinks, handles, counters... anything we touch. It might be over kill... but no one has gotten sick. I hope you all get well soon. Keep enjoying those chicks.

I've had diarrhea while the chicks have been in the brooder and I'm not that good about washing my hands after handling them... but it's just me I have intestinal issues and it happens after every 3-5 meals so don't worry it's probably just a bug

Not long after we started letting my grand daughter start playing with the chickens she got Campylobacter. Her my daughter, her momma, got it to probably from changing the diapers. My daughter was in the hospital for a week from dehydration. They both had diarrhea. Had to take antibiotics. The doc asked if the baby , 16 months old at the time, had been around under cooked chicken,

and she would build up immunity , Well so far she has cleared up no more problems

. She kisses them and carries them everywhere, she is 21 months old now. and loves her chickens!

Now we have some hives on my son...hope this is all coincidental. I put some cortizone on it and it seems better. Oh My Word...this is getting crazy!
