When they're little chicks, I sprinkle some into their chick crumbles--like you would sprinkle salt on something. When they're fully grown, I keep some in a container separate from the food, so they can take it as they wish. It usually lasts a very long time. There's chick grit, which is tiny, and then chicken grit with is a little bigger for the adults.
