Well as I have said before, we bought chickenes for the most ............rude reasons...eggs and meat...we NEVER thought they would have a personality...NEVER thought that they were "individuals"...just...POULTRY...well..the bug has hit us...our barred rock rooster, Cogburn, the 4 girls .....Ms Eula, Ms. Prissy, Baby Sister and Peaches Latour...(all barred rocks)....my husband and I ...love them.....darn....welll.....I was making fun of my husband...and called him "THE LEADER OF THE PECK"...he now has put it to music and instead of reving cars/motorcycles in the background...he has reving tractors.....and mowers....imagine "thats why they call him...THE LEADER OF THE PECK"...with the sound of lawn mowers and tractors...if I can figure out a way to uplaod......you all have to hear it....it is stoo funny .... well I am glad we are not alone1!!!!! Yep, it went the same way for us. I had pigeons when I was a child. It was my fathers passion and I shared in it. So birds have always been a part of my life in one fashion or another.

But after the last bird several years ago, ( a pied cockatiel) I swore, no more. Just too messy to have in the house and I'm a cleanliness freak. There was also the heart break of when I had to put Emily up for adoption due to conflicts between her and our then infant granddaughter Annie, who we've raised since birth (mom and dad have mental issues, if that's not TMI)

Emily started to turn mean as a result of Annie's constant prodding. So, it was either get rid of the bird or get rid of the kid. You can best believe we weren't getting rid of the kid!

Anyhow, years later, feeling that pull of the heart that only birds could fulfill, we opted for chickens. My husband’s thoughts had been more centered around eggs and maybe even meat if we ended up with a roo and they were to breed out of control. (is there such a thing?

)

How could we have known that they'd have such personality? That they are capable of showing such a wide range of emotion? That they could so completely fill that void? Fill it to the point of overflowing? That I would feel the loss of each and every girl that has passed away with the same keenness as the passing of a human?

No, these are not meat birds. They probably never were 2 minutes after acquiring them as fuzzy little fluff balls. They will forever be and have always been “My Girls” and my friends. If someone had told me two years ago that I'd be falling in love with chickens, I'd have told them they were nuts!!
