Okay to put new vinyl over old?

Does anyone have anything to say about installing a new vinyl floor over an old one? The old one has a texture to it and is torn in one area. The salesman says that the contractors will use an embossing leveler. I've been looking on the web for advice. Any info, personal experience and opinions are welcome!

Well, I know in one house we used to live in, when we tore out the kitchen floor, there were 4 layers in there! UGH! U G L Y!! Now, I dont know if that was SUPPOSED to be done that way...hope someone can tell ya for sure.
