***OKIES in the BYC III ***

When my Silkies and Turkeys were a few days old I had to separate them because the Silkies kept trying to peck the turkey's little tiny snoods off. Then they shared a pen for most the summer and did fine together, they were only a few months old though. Then all of a sudden in Sept the turkeys put a hit out on the Silkies (I think it was that whole snood thing back in July). It started off one day with them just chasing them a little. I watched them real close and when one of the turkeys snatched ahold of a Silkie wing I separated them. I'd read different places where people's turkeys killed their chickens so I didn't see any sense in risking it.

Yep, they've got bantam Faverolles also. For some reason the bantams nor the LF's are easy to find. But there'll quite possibly be some at that Dec show in Shawnee. Jackie/Firefly is getting some Faverolles bantams to breed I think.

i am thinking i better bring cages if i go to shawnee???

if i can't get my seramas by then, i'll need to get them from June then....i hate waiting that long!

sounds like turkeys will go on the back burner for a bit- if they do tend to get aggressive....

my aim is the more docile critters...

Robin the secret is to have all NNs that way the turkeys think that they are juveniles and will leave them alone. LOL

I should have taken a picture of the big Red-Tailed perched atop the Turkey pen last spring. Before I could get my camera though the big tom we had jumped, turned upside down and hit the top of the pen hard enough to knock the hawk off. The tom landed on his feet and the hawk landed on his rear on the ground. Musta took it by suprise.

as far as turkeys go(no not referring to folks here), maybe in the spring- i have read where folks raise them with the chickens with no problem- other than the first month or so to get them established.... but for now...i'll stick to what i have and my fascination with banties and seramas- those cochins still melt my heart, and are a riot when they get there little free range time before lock up- they can attain flight pretty good too.... is there such a thing as banty favorolle's?

I saw some banty Favarolles at the Shawnee show last December: Salmon, Blue and one other color. They were amazing!!!!! There is a breeder in Missouri that had her birds there. Muesky and I talked with her. Real nice woman, is on the Favarolle thread often. I'll see if I can find her name.

sounds like your tom would take no nonsense! way to go!

i just wonder- would hawks really confuse a black turkey for a vulture? i have also heard of peacocks going after hawks

A lot of people say not to put them together because of blackhead but I raised mine together for almost a year. Still would be together if the stray dogs hadn't killed them. Dogs got into my pen and killed 9 adult turkeys and 6 chickens. They got along ok but was in a 12X36 pen and the chickens kept out of the turkey's way.

Crossroads..... Sherry wasn't too happy about getting her picture taken though. We didn't get to stay long but enjoyed the show

I would LOVE to see that many birds all in one place! I'm NOT missing the Shawnee show but we'll be changing clothes and bleaching ourselves in thedriveway after we get back. Do you guys worry about diseases at a show like that? If there's Faverolles hens I just won't beable to resist........

It's really not a problem at the shows since you do not handle the birds, or get in areas where their droppings are.. And so long as your not messing with the sale birds. I do treat my birds when they come back since they were handled by teh judge who handled every bird there though.
