Actually not cockoo but barred, use the barred male x Bb Red or Partridge hens, many do this with welsummer thus the Wel-bar, It always works regardless of breeds, I suppose you could use cockoo but the barring pattern is different.
I prefer to use the Partride male x Barred hens and you get better males in the First generation. And better color to work with moving forward. Set 2 pens Part. male x barred hens and Barred male x Part. hens and bring them together in the F2,

Thank you for the information about the crele color. A couple of my Dominique hens have nice barring. Would they work as well as barred rock hens? The comb would be different. Gosh, maybe I want the rose comb.

How does a person decide which hens to use?

We get very attached to our cats also, so sympathize with you and the choice that had to be made. Remember that you gave him a good life and he's better off no longer suffering.

Better make that a BIG note book, coloring gets complicated but fun!

Hey Mefordz, do you dub?

Nope, i make langshanman do it for me!

Much easier that way.

Got back from the vet with our cat, Nigel.
Couldn't find anything wrong. Diagnosis - "spoiled", and we spent how much ? to hear what we already knew. We did get some peace-of-mind; 3 years ago we lost our 15 year old cat to kidney failure, .....weight loss was the first sign.
I LOVE chickens and dogs, (and horses) but cats are a necessity not a luxury.

LOL, I am going to have to find someone to do it for me! Poor Carl is too far away!

bring a note book when we get together,

I found a faster way: I highlite the passage and then right click with my mouse and select "copy". Then I go to my email page and paste the passage into an email and then send it to myself. Then I can perint it off or file it in a folder.

I learn something new every day! I knew how to highlight a passage (although I sometimes have to "quote" the post before I can get it to highlight) but didn't know how to right click and select "copy." Sounds much easier than the extra steps I use. I have been emailing myself information for awhile - and may have learned to do that after reading that trick from you sometime back. Much more handy than opening a Word document and pasting into that - plus I can access the information from my emails instead of having to be on the computer where the document is saved in order to retrieve it.

Howdy all-

Thanks for the greetings and welcomes,I appreciate the hospitality. So sorry for the bad news and losses, I especially hate it when sadness taints the warmth of the holidays. I hope things get better for everyone who needs it!

I seem to have jumped from christmas spirit directly to spring fever! Hope I can dodge any frosts...

I am very very excited about this....I'll be brooding about 15 of these and the rest are for my friends...I have a 5 almost 6 year-old daughter and we LOVE our chickens...her class at school is also doing a hatch this spring so I am also brooding some from her class...I think those will be that super dark egg breed whose name escapes me right this second....as to paring down the flock....I can't have roosters because I am in town so that helps keep me from getting too far gone.. I am planning on doing some enabling with some of my extra girls and any boys that show up....;-) (I'm practicing saying they can go Ksane....I might have cried a little on the way home when I took my feedstore boys to auction last year...I'm hoping to go the enabler route so I know they went to good/useful homes this year)

The list does not include the one last kind of chicken I am looking for..I think I NEED a brabanter....so there is the reason for me to keep looking this spring....anyone know anyone with Brabanters? I love the mohawk...and I just need one pullet...Did I mention that I am rebuilding/enlarging my coop? BWAA HA HA!

GARDENING! gardening used to be my over-winter keep me busy fun task...until CHICKENS!

This last summer did quite a bit to knock the wind out of my gardening sails...HOWEVER , you have to try over-winter gardening... Over winter there are NO BUGS and hardly any weeds! I do mine as lazy as possible, I just lay windows over my raised beds, add some soaker hose and throw in some seeds...you can do most brassicas that way and all the early spring crops...I also start my carrots for spring in the fall under glass..I'll be harvesting greens all winter and my first rotation of radishes are almost picking size....I actually did less than usual this year as I am letting the largest part of the garden lie fallow over winter...I've never tried hoops or row covers...as I suspect would be chasing those down the street the first good wind gust that came along....I get my windows from habitat and I prefer old aluminum storm windows as my wooden ones only lasted 3 years...I'm getting ready to start my spring plants indoors...but I ordered many trailing and trellising things to try this year and the city just obligingly dropped a giant dark rich lovely pile of what used to be my neighbor's front yard in my yard (new sidewalks!) so I will have plenty of dirt to add to some more containers for gardening later this spring....we'll see how things go with me growing stuff and trying to keep chickens eating bugs and not gardens....

Off to get someone ready for school in the morning ( :) ) so I can work in the yard prepping for coop and garden...

Kelly
