***OKIES in the BYC III ***

that should be about right, you brought 4 dozen, plus teh 18 count that you bought. so out of that you should get about 40-47 since only 3 of teh bought eggs were fertile and there were 4 of yours that weren't so had 47 fertile. I expect about 90-95% hatch rate as not all make teh last day or two for one reason or another.
That will be cool. Let's see 1/2 will most likely be roos so 20 or so pullets. Ohh, I'm counting my chicks before they hatch.
Don't have the eggs from Iowa yet. Maybe tomorrow.....at least those have been laid.

I have used the shock collar to prevent chicken chasing, guess I will attempt to use it to break the egg eating. Bad part will be catching him in the act. DH made the chicken door so small the big rooster can hardly fit to get out (or at least he acts as if it is a tight squeeze), but the 100 lb dog can make it through the door (it does take time for him to squeeze through). We have raised the nesting boxes up, DH even built a barrier to keep him from reaching in the boxes. It is so bad I have caught him trying to take eggs while the girls are still laying! I was thinking if I filled a few eggs with mustard that might slow him down. DD thinks when the guineas start laying again that those eggs will be to hard for him, but I doubt it.

Hard to complain about the dog when today a stray was half way up our drive & he chased him off. Plus DH says at least it is eggs & not chickens. Just hate that the dog has such selective hearing.

wretched double posts...

My yard is flooded today, rained all last night and all morning. Got a bit of a break at the moment. Chickens be getting grains today, too much mud & water to feed pellets.

Carl & anyone else that is a genetics person, am I correct in my variety label?

This stag, I've been calling khaki.

Been calling this one Dun.

These are bantam shamo stags.

Cuban, I don't know what to call them, but I've been getting Silkied Serama in both those colors so I will be waiting to hear also. I think you are calling them correctly. ????

I would like to say they are both Dun, as it will breed the same as blue diluting black and creating different shades of teh same color, khaki is the splash form of dun, and naturally you also get black.
The top bird is stunning, I would test mate him to a silver wheaton (Silver Duckwing) hen and see if any black arrises or if all the offsrping come dun in color. If all are dun then he is actually Khaki, if you get some black then he is a lighter phase of dun, but one well worth duplicating , he is absolutely beautifull the pullets should be lined up to meet him..
