***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Try adding a little sand to their feed. Don't know who told us to do it, but we haven't had pasty butt since then.

Our feedstore only has plans for BOs, CX, BRs and a couple other layer Xs besides the bantam assts. Making for a rough time helping the 4H kids get birds. Hoping between BYC peeps in OK/MO/KS area and POOPs to get everyone taken care of.

I will have spare OE and Rosecomb Bantams when they are ready let me know and we will do what we can to get them set up with some quality birds to work with.

where in kansas are you, may be able to help out getting kids some birds.

you and the kids will probably be better off not useing the hatchery birds if they are going to be shown.

a lot of good breeders will give 4h/ffa kids birds to get them started, may be able to get you some contacts to help you out.

Pasty but is ussually a temp problem in the brooder a bit too cold, but sand does help as it gets in teh gizzard and aids in digestion fewer fine particlies of undigetsted feed pass and thats a great benefit across the board since they alkso grow better, use a course sand when possible its best.

I like this idea and it makes perfect sense. I'm going to use sand in the brooder with this next batch of chicks after the 1st few days mainly because the clean up is easier. But your idea gives me one more reason to use it.

Cowboy, I am so sorry for your loss. May you and your family find peace, you all will be in my prayers.
Today at 17:35 (5:35pm) my dad, Eldon Koch passed away. He had pretty muched slipped into a comma for the last week and finally gave up the battle today. Dad was 81 years old and lived life like he wanted too. Thanks for those on here that have asked about him along.

I am just grateful for the rain. Just remember to set up your mosquito buckets and sprinkle DE around the pens.

Getting some rain this morning, at this rate we may actually have a normal spring. The winter was real mild so bug control will be a problem come summer but I am enjoying the weather as it is now.

I am so dang excited!!!!

lol! Oceanseve, that's exactly how my turkey pics have come out since they were babies, that's funny :) I can't ever get pictures of them because they want to be right in my face seeing what the camera is. Have you ever had turkeys before? I never had and really like their personalities.

Sand and vaseline are the way to go for pasty butt.

I just want to say how much I love this thread and how wonderful all of you are. This is what true "social networking" is supposed to be. Thanks all of you for being the wonderful people you are!!!! Yes my house is close to the river today. Got to love hormones!

We've had a judge for the last several years that had a thing for (IDK) hatchery only. Plus we've got new kids we don't want to scare off. Poultry has been all but dead here save for a handful of kids. Our dept head said we may actually get a new "real" judge this year which has thrown everything for a loop. We're going to do a group CX thing, but have to handle the details. If anyone else has done that suggestions are appreciated.

I have a short list so far of things I know people want specifically. Some are our wants too. Last year we gave out hatching eggs and chicks from our flock, but we're without roos, so that's not possible for this year. Now too late to hatch anyways. I know for sure there is a family that wants dark bantam cornish. Another wants Mille Fluer & Porcelain.....D'Uccles or BBs, will need to double check. Anyone have chicks for sale? We could use a couple of roos, 1 blue/1 black for DS's LF Ameraucanas. That's mostly what we gave out last year and everyone ended up with girls.

Then we lost both roos. I'd like some more Porcelain Booted Bantams, chicks or older for my youngest. She only has the one hen. There's one kid that wants a couple diff colors of Rocks, but his Grandfather seems pretty set on a hatchery. Dept head said the one call he got they seemed pretty set on the feedstore. That's why I was trying to best guess what's in the asst at ours because that's it for the next month other than BSLs and CX. :p

Other than the small handful from the several previous years, we're talking all newbies and young, so state is out. Really want to hook them in for the long haul.

I have birds that will compete at the national level in several varieties, I will not let young birds go easily but will work closely with you to set teh new comers up with some very good stock to show, if money is an issue set that a side, I would prefer as you to get them hooked on showing breeding is asecondary thing, I can provide "loaners" for show season or vey good birds for show or breeder birds for them to work from once the birds are of age of course. Unfortunately I cannot let things go too early without shooting my own show season out..

It works, helps create a healthier imune system, stronger more vigorous chicks, better growth rate and reduces the pasty but problems. The bags of course play sand or course sand blasting sand works well, you can also use pecan, walnut, or other nut shells as well they are typically very plentifull and more fragrant than sand.
