***OKIES in the BYC III ***

I'm trying to motivate myself enough to go out and dig up runnergrass roots out of 1.5 garden / runs, they are at the sandy end of the garden so I can probably dig in them. Fridays are so hard to get motivated on (my day off sandwiched between two 24 hour shifts) I keep telling myself if I get it out of the way I won't get slowed down when I plant the garden this week.

Sooner, yes it takes longer and you get the old fashioned roots w/ both male and female shoots. I have quite a few I've started from roots last year and this year, they will be the "prefered" all male shoots and I can harvest from them while the seed planted ones develop.

I will need you and NanaKat to explain the way to tell a male from a female plant (No Metzford!) I haven't figured that out yet. I would also like to know how you started from roots????? I will be away from the computer for a while but hopefully can find your reply or you can PM it.

Sounds like we are all doing about the same things. This is what I have so far:

Peach tree (last fall)
4 Grape vines
2 pecan tree's
2 pear tree's
1 cherry tree

I will be adding more Grapes but hope to get my fence taken care of plus I am not above watching for them to go on clearance. I may work on Strawberries next year since my MIL won't be keeping as many for herself since she can't eat them.

!!

i hate fruit trees with a passion, but that may be because i am alergic to bee stings, and i hate the smell of rotting fruit everywhere!

the worst part is all that work! i am too lazy for gardening.

i am so glad there are people that like doing it, cause i do love to eat fresh veggies and fruits!

All my current chicks are from the bantams I got from artsyrobin last year. I ordered 10 australorp pullets from the local feed store and have 5 muscovy duck eggs in the new incubator with 13 of our guinea eggs. In the old incubator I have 39 guinea eggs that my Mom gave me so we may be swimming in guineas here in a few weeks!

We are just loving all the new babies and planting projects in Spring!

I have been gone for a week and didn't try to catch up. Did Delilah stop being broody?
Roger the Roo is doing fine down with the flock. He still is the messiest eater, spills his whole food bowl.

Yes, she has been laying now this week. The hatchery blue laced red Wyandotte has been in the air cage for two weeks sitting on any poop balls she could gather up between cleanings of the cage. I finally gave up today and took her out of the cage and tossed her on the grownd. She growls and puffs up if you even come near her..sounds like a hormonal cat.
Glad for the upadate on little Roger Roo. Hubby askes about him often.

I turned in the top 3-4 inches of teh garden area last weekend and that is real soft now, thought it would help kill off some of teh volunteers that were coming up but it rained so much the days after I doubt it will help all now, probably just set the roots deeper but I have a plan anyway.
The weekend forcast looks good as far temps and weather is concerned so everyone will likely be working outside getting plenty done.

Can't wait to get back into the garden. Think I'll have to run the weed wacker instead of the mower because the ground is still so wet. We're throwing bolted turnips over the fence to the cows and chickens. Couldn't get out there to pull them before they bolted.

coral- love those babies!! they are so darn cute! just DE'd the runs, that should help some- hey is it possible for a roo to get layngitis? Captain is crowing a third a crow...???
My little Spangled OEGB had laryngitis. Gave him pill form antibiotics and homeopathic drops. He is crowing like his old self....took a week.

Female asparagus hastiny yellow flowers and little round green seed pods that turn red when ripe...about the size of a pea. The male plants don't bloom, so they make bigger spears. Starting from roots, means getting the crown and the roots attached in a package...usually about 10 plants in a bag.

No wonder the dogs have to have a special dog food....to counteract all the junk they nibble!!!
Bet they even think the wire cages around the trees are toys too.
