***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Yes, we have pretty much decided it was a cougar. We are proud of our dogs for driving it off, whatever it was.

BTW, I am obviously in the market for another dog or two, so I'll PM you about your pups. Nice to see you online! Say hi to the Egg Man for me. Miss you guys at the auctions.

I pm'd ya back. Yeah, I'll say Hi to Gerald for ya, when I see him again ... I'm at work now, so it'll have to be in the morning. Yeah, I wish we had more time to go to auctions, like we used to. I miss visiting with ya'll and meeting & visiting with all Okies. Well, I can retire in less than 5 years ... so maybe then I can visit with people more. I hope I can last that long ... it sure is tough spending most of my life at work.

I think I have the weekend of POOPS off ... if not we'll try to attend for a little while, since it's not too far from work.

I hadn't heard about the shoe polish, why white I wonder? I had read awhile back to use iodine and I did that. There weren't many that had scabs, a few on their combs but none on their faces or beaks. I'm not even so sure the scabs on the combs weren't from scuffling with each other.

I did read that article awhile back and did order the vaccine and vaccinated every bird here 10 days ago. They send you enough vaccine for 1000 birds but it's only good for a few hours once you mix it so you have to throw it out afterwards. It was real fun sticking 50 or 60 birds with that double prong thing in their wing web . I even did the baby chicks that were here.
I'm wondering if the only way to find out for sure what I'm dealing with is take one of them to the vet. That may be the answer right there.

Forgot the rest of my post:

Thanks for the info you posted, Les.
That's the 1st I've ever read that they remained carriers after recovery with Fowl Pox though. Everything else I've read said they're immune afterwards and *not carriers.
Flagyl/Metrinidazole is commonly used for canker and I can get that pretty easily. I used to keep a huge bottle of it around for rescue dogs with giardia. I honestly don't think it's Canker because that takes direct contact and birds in yards far away from each other have gotten it. I thought at 1st it was *something that got drug home from the Newcastle auction, that may be where the original infected bird came from. It also takes months to spread and months for them to get over it. I wonder if maybe I should try the Flagyl on one of the birds with the patches in its throat just on the off chance it's canker.
Carl, Fowl Powl is rampant in Oklahoma. Especially now with mesquitoes all over. It doesn't help we live 300 ft from a creek.

If I remember right you posted pics this winter after the snow of all of the wild bird tracks in your pens. You were fuming because you had built the pens with high security in mind and they had breached your security. So your birds may have had indirect contact with each other. I haven't read about the spread of the wet pox but since it is viral and is occuring in the mouth I wouild assume that it could be spread through the waterers like Canker could. Chances are the wild birds were after a drink of unfrozen water.

Even with immunity a critter can still be a carrier, as you know it's called asymptomatic where you carry a disease yet are not affected by it.

That looks amazing. Such pretty birds too.

Watching that big cat mosey about in the height of the day ended my going outside at night to smoke and reaffirmed my decision to not allow my children out in the yard unattended. That's one thing I didn't regret about moving to town.

I wish I could get my DH to switch to raised beds. I swear I'm about to scream when he goes into his my great-great did it this way speech. He plants a massive traditional garden every year that we don't have the time to tend to. It becomes a weedy, water wasting, eyesore. I bought one of those potato growing sacks from the feed store yesterday, so

I can get more than a bowlful this year. I've been thinking about some of those chicken tunnels too. Would be smarter to scale back and use raised beds and hoop systems.

Back from the Blanchard sale, scored a Welsummer Roo that Michael brought and a bumper tag from Rebecca other than that I didn't find anything I just couldn't live without I left earlier than I usually get out of there need to play catch up on some sleep and get busy early tomorrow, Was a blast as always getting to see some fellow BYC'ers...

For those that asked about my nanny goat I took her to the vet on Friday and she is doing just fine she wasn't expecting another kid she's just fat and healthy so a clean bill of health for her, I asked her about the fishtail thing and what I should do about copper deficiency she told me that the goats weren't having a problem and that trying to increase the copper could harm them so I guess there is some controversy there on the subject, I really have no idea but my Vet seemed certain that it was something that people didn't need to treat goats for.

Hope everyone has a great rest of the weekend..

I got some info on the auction in Walters
Chickens will sale 7 pm Monday April 9
Consignment starts 4. ---- they said they will allow misc stuff but it will sale 6-7 anything not yet sold will go to the end. They are hoping for lots of Texas folks to attend.
After April the auction will be 1st Monday of the month in Walters on main st.
I am sure even more info will follow.

I left Blanchard about 1230 & they were still selling birds. DD fell asleep about 5 min before home, she played hard tonight. We got home & set the eggs in the incubator-- she went straight to sleep.
While I was at the auction DH worked on the garden fencing & put headlights on the zero turn. Then of course he had to test out the headlights so he mowed about an acre.
Tomorrow is suppose to be a beautiful day, better get some sleep so I can spend the day playing in the sunshine.

Does the Vet believe in offering the goat minerals? In my limited research I haven't heard much controversy, but I do know there are many people who only allow goats to forage without commercial feed or minerals. I imagine if you went to 3 different vets you would get 3 different opinions.
