***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Have you ever planted vining okra ? It growns like crazy, like cucumber vines, flowers like okra and make pods that are rigided, you can eat them when they are small or let them grow, dry them out, rough up the outside of them with a butter knife and they are like loofahs.

I have half buried tires in the run and am going to plant inside w/ vining or vining type plants (malabar spinach, cukes, squash, indeterminant tomatoes etc...) then encircle the planted tires w/ sturdy wire fence ( the stuff they put in concrete) planted in sets of 3 tires w/ space between them then topped and connected w/ the same wire. The plan is the plants will grow up and over the wire making green shade for the girls. They won't be in these runs until after it gets really hot (the last of June or so) so the plants should be good and big both for shade and so they can't do any serious damage by pecking at whatever leaves they can reach. That is the plan anyway, this is my first attempt at this so we'll see how it goes.

We have 6 turkey eggs in the incubator. This is my first try, so it is a learning experience for myself & DD.

Mitzi that site was able to convert the image! YEAH!!!! But it shadowed out a few letters & such. I am going to play with a few things & see if I can get it to work.

I've heard about vining okra, but have not grown any. It was one of the things I was looking for seeds for earlier this year, but then got side tracked w/ other seeds.

Hello folks! Beautiful day here. I put the baby chicks outside in the sun,I think it did them jgood.

Lynn or anyone else if you need some seed for the vineing okra I have a bunch.

Had a few more chicks hatch out at my buddies. Have lost several of the last batch, they just never seemed to thrive.

I built a new nest box to hang on the outside of a cage this morning and then pulled a bunch of weeds from the flower beds. Then this afternoon I started putting the wire up on the garden gazebo so I put the parakeets in it for the summer.

Hope everyone has a nice evening.

Did you find the squash seed you were looking for a while back?

Yes and no. I found them, but the price of the seed pkt and shipping was $10, and I couldn't justify spending that much on one pkt of seeds, so I'll just wait until next year. I've got other new seeds to try out anyway, including a couple of other squash types.

Alright Oklahomans, I need your input! We are hatching about 20 eggs (a pre-k class project) and I have a broody hen that is getting her way and getting a special place to sit on eggs. In about 21 days when the chicks hatch, will I need to have a brooder box inside the house for the babies, or will an outdoor brooder work? Will the outside temps be ok for them with a light for heat still? Can the baby chicks be put in with the mama hen after her eggs hatch? Will she keep them warm or will I need a heat lamp for them? Am I crazy for giving into the broody hen and letting her hatch some eggs??? (My husband thinks I am!)

I could use any advice or shared experience!!

Spent the day working in the new henhouse and the old hen house. The boys got the other screen door installed and removed the tin beteen the two houses and I was able to put up the wire. It is so cool...literally.... in there.
Of course had to split up the clean leg chicks from the feathered ones. Moved the Big CWs out to the outdoor pen, cleaned the new floor pen and set it up for the 17 clean leg chicks. Then cleaned the old floor pen and kept the 11 feather footed chicks there.
Cleaned the layer section and of course, had to take out 6 wheel barrow loads of floor dirt/composted poo when I moved the old roost over to adjust for the new door. The dust box needed to be replenished with sand, lime, sulphur and ash. You would have thought I'd given them something they never had before.. the dust was flying!
Then it looked like every waterer was dirty and needed cleaning and refilling. Then the feeders needed filling.
I'm beat! but the birds are happy.

Here's some pics.
The first will need some advice. Yhe little blue quail d'Anver roo looks to have an underbite...should I file his lower beak or tip the upper beak or simply leave it....?.

Look at LilGuy dancing for the clean legged girls...They are the same size, but none of them wanted to dance....

A bunch of Cochin Aussie cross babies...I'm seeing a number of roos

Put this young trio outside...Thought the roo was a Minorca/CW cross.....

Here are a few of the younger chicks...why is it when you want to take a picture, they have really fouled their water...looks like they are saying "We didn't do that!" Good thing there are two waterers and feeders in that tank.

Here is a view from the old henhouse thru the screened wall into the new room...

And Delilah is trying to go broodie and molt at the same time...she gives serious stink eye!

And of course there are other broodies...a Buff Minorca and a hatchery BLRW that has been in an air cage and now still wants to sit. Both growl, fluff up and claim any hole with an egg!
