***OKIES in the BYC III ***

sorry i took a while to get back to this post... I have 28 baby chicks at home to watch. They just got used to being with adult chickens and a guinea, which we are getting more guinea baby soon, 4.

Well that sounds great... ours got a lot of rain and they went in shock, but we are hoping they grow bigger soon too. I'm waiting for blueberries too... I'm waiting for orange roses too. I have one tomato flower now I'm waiting for too. We have wild raspberry/blackberry/just some kind of red berry plant that have thorns growing in many places of where we live, in Louisiana. I live with a man who hates them, but he don't kill them all. I ate some last year. Fresh, I tried to save some in a jar but they molded, I need to buy some pectin, right?

I want to get some blueberry bushes, but I need to move my raspberries first and didn't get to that yet this spring, so now I'll have to wait for the blueberries.

There is a recipe for putting berries in ETOH, to make a hard sauce, it sounded great to me (I don't eat much jelly b/c of wheat allrgy) I forget which ETOH it was but maybe vodka? It was in a preserving cookbook I have I'll have to look it up.

We have poke salad ALL over our place. I will be cooking some in a few wks. My grandma use to make my grandpa drive all over the farm to collect poke salad.
Got a foraging book today at goodwill. Stalking the wild asparagus, inside the book there ate neatly folded magazine articles from family circle magazine in 1973 about gathering wild food. Very neat find!! I have had the book on my wishlist for a while. I still would like the current version since it has color photos, but I can always google the photos when I doubt!

Is poke salad dandelion greens? My mother said her grandma used to pick dandelion greens and wilt it with bacon grease and call it poke salad.

If you've got wire all around how would the cat be getting in? Or do you think she's reaching in and pulling them out? I had a cat do that once while I was working on a coop. Small space in between boards, but reached right in and got a claw deep enough to pull it through.

That's why I think the chick escaped first. I thought she was too big to squeeze through the chain link, but maybe she managed.
