***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Thank you! I think so too. You probably wouldn't see them around here, they are native out West, and you have to have a permit to keep here them (legally)...I do by the way, lol. I've got 3 different types of New World Quail...and they are all pretty spastic..."anti-bonk" is because they can literally jump so hard straight up they'll kill themselves on open wire in short cages....that's way I have carpet lining the top, lol. For me the least spastic are the Blue Scales....they aren't as flighty...but are certainly a hands off bird!
Now on Coturnix...I have a little over hundred of those guys as breeders, 12 different colors, and I find they are almost too tame. I have to push them out of the way to get to their feeders and waterers. They allow me to pick them up and they will calm right down...if I'm not careful, I'd step on them when I go in their pens.
Another old world quail species I have are the Chinese Blue Breasted Quail (CBBQ) or "Button quail"...those a spastic little dudes! But a great indoor bird, a lot of times used to clean up the bottom of house bird aviaries, or big cages...they are monogamous and mate for life, they only live in pairs too...they will not tolerate any other CBBQ in their territory....really colorful. Some folks will keep them in pairs in 10 gallon fish tanks...being tropical, they have to be "inside birds"..But are broody and raise their own young if you let them...(I've got eggs in the bators) 16 day incubation time, 6 weeks later their at breeding age much like a coturnix...
That figures, the prettiest ones need a permit. I looked into Button Quail awhile back, people seem to really like them. I need to go back and look them up further. You know a lot about quail!

As far as Guinea stories-we've got one of those 3' tall industrial fans that used to blow in the shed for the birds. When I had all 5 Guineas they used to stand smack in front of the fan with their beaks touching it while it was blowing, flap their wings and SCREAM their heads off! The stupidest thing I ever saw animals do lol My husband said they thought they were flying and weren't smart enough to realize they weren't going anywhere.
My 2 turkey hens walk around honking like seals constantly now that they're in the back yard, As soon as someone sits down on the deck they run over and cuddle up and want petted. They're really super sweet but dang, they're noisy. I don't think it's that they miss the tom so much as they've never been out of their pen and they feel lost even though they have a ton bigger area.

Wanted to share a photo of my new California Valley quail, 2 pair, just picked them up from the post office this morning. They flew in from New Mexico. Right now they are in a "anti-bonk" quarantine pen...apologize for quality, but you can see the jest of them...

Now your talking my language. Those are SO great bfrancis, beautiful birds.

City clucks, They are awfully brave to put a dog that big around goats without knowing its history! Our GP at first would grab the goats by their hind legs to try & wrestle with them like he does with the other dogs. Now our goats are bigger & Carmel will stand up on 2 legs & charge the GP. She only tries to headbutt our Australian Shepard to get her point across but the GP has pushed his luck to many times.
I think if I wasn't home to watch over him he would have really hurt the goats at first (especially the fainting goats).
Hope the GP doesn't mess with your birds while you ate waiting for it to go to its new home! Evidently it was never around birds. Most dogs that have been raised with birds don't seem to notice them.

I agree Christina! I told these people I didn't know what she'd do around the goats...I have trained my little dog to ignore the chickens and other animals, but he's maybe 20 pounds...training a 90 pound dog might be a different matter!

Big dogs are easier to train than little dogs only because little dogs do things and everyone lets them get away with them cause it's perceived as being cute where a big dog is scolded it leads the little dogs to think they are the leaders of the pack and ranked above the owners so aren't subject to the same trusts that a lower ranked critter in the pack might be,
I always like sharing what an old girlfriend of mine told me about housebreaking dogs (applies to chicken proofing also) When you find a place where the dog had gone to on the floor you take a paper and roll it up nice and tight then beat yourself in the head while repeating "I forgot to watch the puppy!" "I forgot to watch the puppy!"
When you are the leader of the pack the pupsters will trust that you know best when you tell them not to eat the food till you process it for the both of you LOL

it time to share some pics of the UK orps
