***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Good Morning Everyone! seemed a little cool last night after the warmer weather we've been having I slept all night and didn't want to get up, bad thing is now that I'm up I still don't want to go in to work LOL
I went to Dr yesterday and the young lady at the reception desk has one chicken she had two but lost one I invited her to visit the thread it sounded to me like her single hen might be trying to go broody, then on the way home the young lady working at the store is building a coop and is looking for info on chickens to put in it so I gave out another card LOL Lots of interest in raising chickens seems like more all the time

Have a great day, See you all soon....

took some pics of my BBR aracaunas today

they have exalant color and typ but the roooster has yelow legs but i chose him for the breeding pin because he has the best color and typ and because the yelow legs are a resesive by breeding him to hens with good leg color i will hatch roos with good blue/black legs

and also took some pics of my brown red araucanas

What a pretty bird!

Don't think I posted pictures here for the Belgian d'Anvers or the Blue Cochins....if I did. then I claim partsheimers as my excuse for reposting.
There are 6 color varieties and a couple of Spangled OEGB in the mix.

A week older now:

Blue Cochins from the Bo Garrett eggs...soooo cute at one week.

Oh and for those who like frog legs....This one dressed out at 1 pound.
Wow! He's huge! I've tried frog legs, never cared for them, might be different that fresh!

Morning everyone. Want to stay home and work on the garden today, but have a endocrinologist appt. Kinda wish it was back in the days drs came to you instead of you going to them, waiting for 2 hours past your appt for them to appear for 5 minutes and then send you on your way.

Well, now that I finally got caught up on what everyone else has posted since poops, here's my story:
I brought home the little club-footed serama roo from retired army wife. My granddaughter fell in love with him, and all of her animal acquisitions have to live at Grandma's house since they live in town. Of course, that's half the reason I give in and get them for her!
Since neither of us could remember his name, she started calling him Serama Sam. We put his cage in the breezeway of the barn next to my playpen of baby chicks since retiredarmywife said he was lonely for other chickens. Yesterday, I got the bright idea that he might be able to hang out with my juvenile frizzles and bantam cochins, but even at about 3 months they are twice his size and the cockerels are already getting pretty cocky. He didn't much like the crowd and hid out in a dog crate I had sitting by the gate.
About a week ago I bought some young LF cochins. The oldest are probably three months old and already nearly as big as my laying hens. There is one blue that just kind of stayed off to itself and acted about half depressed. Whenever I would go to the pen, it wanted to be held and would crawl up to my shoulder and sit there, talking to me about its sad and lonely life. So, yesterday I put it in the cage with Sam. It was like Mutt and Jeff! That cochin baby makes about six of that full grown Serama roo, but there was an instant bonding. They started eating together and you would have thought they were long lost compadres reunited. Never saw two happier birds and the cochin chick acts like a completely different bird now.
Now, for the rest of the story......
My husband is a self-proclaimed chicken-hater. He doesn't complain about my chicken addiction, and even brags to his friends about some of my birds, but has nothing to do with them. Well, yesterday I told him to come watch this chick. I was pretty impressed with the way it just wanted to be held and sit on my shoulder, anyway, and wanted to show him. When I took it out of the cage and it climbed onto my shoulder, he reached out and started petting it. Then, lo and behold, here came Serama Sam to see what we had done with his buddy. Hubby reached down and picked him up and just held him, petting the little dickens. Wise wife that I am, I never said a word.

I'm thinking that he's been bit by the bug, just a little, though. That tiny little rooster following us all over the yard really got to him. Thanks, Tina! Not only did your roo find a forever home, but he is apparently just what the doctor ordered to convert yet another chicken addict! That might not be a good thing, altogether, though. We may have to sell the horses to have room for all the chickens if he gets as hooked as I have.......

5 pages behind, i'll play catchup but had to share these

nilly's first two are out, one more to go, the one on the right is a cochin/barredrock the black is a silky/cochin....

i have them in a cage in the banty coop- do i need to separate them completely or just section off an area for them??

Oh I am so glad! He really was lonely here. I couldn't find a chicken that got along with him. If they were smaller then him he was mean to them. If they were bigger they were mean to him. His name doesn't matter of course. I never thought he liked that name. LOL He is very smart. Somehow I just knew he belonged with another family. Give Serama Sam a chicken hug for me and tell him I'm happy for him.

The little chick that had gotten stuck in the brooder during the snake attack died yesterday. I thought it was doing better, but guess it wasn't thriving. On a better note we have had 50+ guineas keets hatch in the past 24 hours. The house is far from quiet now!!! Looks like this batch includes a few slate & light blue, still no whites or buff dundottes but I am sure they are not far behind.

I need to go do some garden work today, but I want to go to the chirpractor & check out one of our rentals. Tenant moved out over the weekend & I am wanting to put it up for sale. Last wk we sold 3 of our houses, so if we sale this one that would just leave our 2 nicest houses, which means one for each of our girls. This wk cash for the house sounds so much better than the $550 a month we get for rent. Maybe I will do garden work today & worry with the houses later?

Here is a shot of the keets that just came out of the hatcher

If all goes well I should have some blues with black laceing in a couple of years. Right now I am working to get a nice flock of blues.

The two splash males we have are doing an excellent job of throwing blue babies and I will have to wait and see how they look once they get some size on them.

Awesome!
"I got the Texas Star Hibiscus. Where I'm thinking I REALLY want to plant it, my DH will pitch a fit if I do it before we get the new fencing up and a few other things. He plants everything IMHO haphazardly just to make my mowing more of a pain.
rant.gif
Anyone see a problem with repotting to a bigger pot for now?"

I brought the hibiscus, so from my 'great and extensive' experience, be careful when transplanting. Those particular hibiscus hate having their feet disturbed. I transplanted a few last year after starting them and every one of them went shocky. Most are coming back from the root this year, but I thought I had lost them all. When you do plant them, I would cut the pot off instead of trying to pull the plant out. Other than that, it should do fine in a larger pot until you are ready to give it a permanent home.
Ok, thanks. Crazyhorse707 gave me some old molasses tubs. They're massive. Who knows, maybe it'll become more permanent.

To all of you for all your hard work. It made our first POOPS a great experience and we're looking forward to many more! Thank you everyone for a great day!

I think we have it. We brought a bunch of cords and DH might have grabbed yours by accident. I laughed when you said 'orange', they usually are, huh, and so easy to mix up. I think I'll tag ours from now on to prevent future oopsies. (need that embarrassed smilie again *lol*) If all goes as planned we'll be in Shawnee on the 23rd and can meet you there or somewhere in-between if you'd like, unless you need it sooner than that. I'm starting a new job that week and am hoping I won't have to reschedule the doc appointment I have that day. I'll PM you any updates if that works for you.

Thanks for checking. I am sure it will turn up somewhere.
I am sorry for giving you the wrong directions to Sonic.
I said go left and it should have been right. Of course it was only 50 yards
but still I was wrong so I must admit it! Hope you didn't miss it.
See above unless you all have already sorted everything. This thread just moves too darn fast sometimes.
I love hibiscus, I planted three last year but only two made it. I really hope they are red.

Good morning Okies'
From the pics, this one is red.
big_smile.png
Looks more of a Christmas red as opposed to my Oklahoma red roses.

I had a score today. On the way back from Schulter Gary took a back road, I had him stop so I could take some pics of a roadside wildflower (it was to windy and the flower to wispy to get any good shots) but while I was trying I noticed the whole area covered in walking garlic, and the bulbils were ready to pic. So I got a popcorn bag (the size at the convenience stores) full of bulbils! Woo Hoo, after it gets establilshed I will never have to buy garlic again.

I tried to pull some whole plants out but the ground was rock hard and cracked, so after the next rain I may take a drive to that road w/ a little shovel.
