***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Happy Birthday Bill hope you had a good hatch today.
I just changed the bedding in the keet hutch I'm keeping the 16 week-old guinea keets in (thanks jcatblum/Christina & Taron). I took them out and put them in a box while I changed out their newspaper/alfalfa bedding. Each and every one screamed bloody murder at the top of their tiny lungs when I reached in and grabbed them. How does something that little make a noise that loud? (age-old question asked by anyone who has ever cared for a child/kitten/keet/chick/puppy) Everyone in the neighborhood probably now thinks I was slaughtering toddlers in my backyard. A police car just drove by and the officer in it was looking at my house.

On Mars, the Guinea Fowl's home planet, I guess there aren't many predators.

I laughed out loud at your story and hubby had to see too.
That is a beautiful bird and you can actually see his teeth in the roof of his mouth!!!

chicken wire won't even slow keets down. I have it over the entirety of my chain link grow out pen and can't begin to catch the keets going back and forth between the inside and outside of the pen - without 2 other people on the other side of the fence/wire to try and catch them as they slip between my fingers. Hardware cloth should work.

My five little stinkers!! That's all that happened. And I'm thankful. Really thankful because one of them could not get up this morning when I pulled them from the incubator. He/she could only lay on it's side even when I would sit it up right. My dad said we would probably need to cull it but I wanted to give it a chance even though it laid like that all night. So I sat it in the bowl hoping it just needed to get its strength up and came home tonight to see this! Now finger's crossed they do better than my pheasants did. I only have two left out of the five that had hatched. :(

Thank you for posting that. I'm building pens this week and was wondering about that. I don't have guineas yet but plan to get some very soon. LOVE the helmeted one CityClucks posted. I've seen photos of that kind but not one in person. Would like know if anyone nearby has those. They're so pretty!

Busy week ahead so probably won't be online much. The new coop needs paint and I still need to do a little inside work (roosts, linoleum floor, that sort of thing.) Will post pics if it ever gets finished. Too many things going on at once to get anything finished at all, it seems.

Happy Birthday Bill!

Michael said no Newcastle sale this wk! Oh my. We will have LOADS of keets!! Imagine we will sale some locally.

That stinks! I have some birds to take too...and have some eggs to deliver and a roo to pick up...

With no official auction...who wants to host a mini poops II and be the auctioneer? A quick "pay the seller" Would alleviate the need for a cashier...takers? Sounds like several people have birds to sell and others will have some to buy.

Shoot...the one great poultry auction too...hope everything is well with Modernman and his family.

Hubby had a doctor appointment in the city today so we ordered and picked up 260 pounds of long cut cabbage for making kraut. Put 235 pounds up this afternoon into crocks: a 20 gal, 10 gal, 8 gal and 5 gal. Will be canning it in 4 - 6 weeks.
And set another 5 gallon with Stephanie. She is becoming an efficient canning wizard! She made some great pickles and sent me home with a jar. Hubby thinks they are wonderful also.
Tomorrow will be work in the garden day.

bfrancis - ya, when there's not an auction at Newcastle it kinda blows the whole auction-going momentum. I wish there was one (that I know about) in the eastern part of the state. There's an auction in McAlester on Friday evenings, and sometimes they have poultry there, but it's not a sure thing. I haven't been to the one in Stilwell before but may give that one a try sometime. It's just not the same, though, without all the BYCers.

Mike said the Newcastle barn was booked for something else. Think they are suppose to be trying to call & let people know there won't be a sale.

Next Newcastle sale kids are wanting to go to a concert @ frontier city. We may have to drop stuff off run to the concert then come back to catch the end of the auction. Or get DH to take the kids to the concert. I sure know I see enough of frontier city & concerts with the kids. Somehow he always misses most of the fun.
