A ferret would be a possibility, because I'm sure they can climb, but I don't think a skunk. Whatever it was had to go over a 6' fence to get into the pen.

And, I have to tell you, Nana, I told my bullfrogs yesterday that they sure are lucky they live here and not at your place. I sat under the grape arbor and watched two great big ole daddy bullfrogs just sitting on the bank of our pond island and thought of you. I won't let anyone kill the ones here because I enjoy listening to them too much. Luck frogs that I like the sound better than the meat at this point in life!

The gardens all needed the rains I'm sure.. but it's really slowing me down today. I feel about twice my actual age today and not real motivated to move, it just doesn't feel good to get up. I had intended to build another A-frame or two today but that will be put on hold yet again. Maybe the boy's can get that done when they get out of school later this week. That will buy me the extra space I need short term and the breeder pens for next year in the long term. wow I cut back and need more pens great math huh.

This weather does mess with the old bod, doesn't it? I always tell everyone it's not my age that slows me down; it's the high miles down rough roads! Every old horse injury I've ever sustained reminds me loud and clear what I put my body through in years past, especially when the weather is damp or cold. I don't know who coined the phrase 'golden years', but they were nuts! Rusted up is more like it. It's just too bad that WD40 doesn't loosen us up........

Hello. I am new here on BYC. I live in Newalla, OK and just recently got some more chickens to raise. Years ago I had several breeds of chickens but now only a few Lavender Orps. They are only a couple of months old so can't wait till they grow up.

Lyn, that calf sounds more like a goat than a calf! I guess cattle are pretty bad about eating just about anything, though. My FIL's nice Hereford bull had to take a trip to the vet last week because he kept laying down and not acting right when he was up. I hauled him up there and then straight to the sale barn. He had ingested hardware (metal of some kind). The vet said that putting magnets down him wouldn't help at this point since the damage had already been done and that he was only good for slaughter. They really took a loss and are thinking of completely selling out since they only had a few cattle, anyway.

An electric fence around my chicken pens would only have to go around the top. I have the entire inside of the pen lined with sheet metal around the bottom, so nobody gets to stick their head out. I have a few Pharaoh quail in a cage and I used to set them out in the yard during the day-- until one of them stuck its head out and DH's dog snapped it off. I wanted to shoot the dog, but it would have ended in divorce, so now the quail have to stay inside the chicken compound, too. She (the dog) never even looks at the chickens, but she's obsessed with those quail.

I have 3 pairs for Madison, all are 12 weeks + out of the brooders and off medicated feed,
For Jim I have several cockrells and a few RC pairs all are also about the same age.

That might be more than my mom can handle...... Let me think on it & see what I can come up with.

I tried to post yesterday & it wouldn't let me. Yes she is over it & doing good. She played soccer that Friday in a tournament & won first place.

Morning all, slow goin around here this morning, I have to take Dakota to the Dr. today and hopefully get the cast off his leg, it should be healed now (broken ankle), have not been outside yet, acquired two new piggies yesterday I call them Ham and Bacon, The Smoker Brothers!!!! Taking the other two to the butcher on June 16th. So far I have five broodies on eggs, took the momma away from the first batch of chicks a couple days ago and they are doing good. Great pictures of the gardens and birds. Tomaotes are not far off, am so looking foreward to fresh tomatoes from the garden, picked 2 great big cabbages this weekend, and beets, lots of beets, and lots of apricots. squash hopefuly this coming weekend to.

I have a zuch that is technically big enough to pick, but I let my zuchs get a little on the big side b/c they are dedicated to my spaghetti noodles.

We actually have two dogs that stay outside and they do a good job of keeping predators away. This is the first time ever I've had a problem. Thinking about it, we do have feral barn cats and I'm kind of wondering if one of those might be the culprit. The dogs don't bother them because the cats live here and have been around forever, and it would have had to be something that size or smaller to have gotten in to where the chicks were. All I know for certain is that whatever it was, I am NOT a fan!

I have never seen a cat kill w/o eating at least the parts they like the best.

Morning all! love this rain just wish I were at home in bed enjoying it. It will make the poor chickens runs really a muddy, mucky mess but we did need this additional rain. We only got 3/8" of rain as of yesterday afternoon so this is very welcome.

Mitzi, sorry to hear about your hatch. Did you already give up on them? If not it may be the weather. I had a hatch that got up to 110 deg and still hatched out 4 of the eggs. I have golden salmon marans eggs that are just now pipping and they should have hatched Wednesday. I think it is the humidity right now. They just better get busy hatching because I have more eggs that need their spot come Friday.

Everyone have big plans for the weekend? I am going to do Dad and my usuall Memorial Day outting. Hubby went with me last year but it will be good for me to go this year by myself. So I will be taking a road trip to Perry and then possibly Wellington,KS and I need to get up to Enid. Dad and I didn't make it to Enid his last year and so I need to go before I forget where to put flowers out at.

OkieT, sorry to hear about your losses. Knock on wood we haven't had any to predetors other than a dog once. Our runs are all covered in wire because we have so many hawks and owls. We let 9 sexlink males out to free range at 9 weeks old and by 4 days out they all had been snatched up. So now I know for sure free ranging my layers will not be possible. To make it up to them I have been taking our big wire cages and putting two in each one and letting them out in those to eat and scratch when I am out there to keep an eye on them.

Carl, hubby tried to call yesterday just give him a shout so he can plan on when to pick up birds. He will be going to the feed store today but I know your working so today is out but he can do one evening so long as he gets them before Thursday noon he can get them to Tulsa for you.

Well off to work, only 4 days this week then off for 4.
