***OKIES in the BYC III ***

I am ready to scream. I set 41 eggs in my homicidal LG incubator last month. Today is day 24 and I'm going to give up. Not. One. Pip. Not a single one. Temps were steady the whole time. I have two glass lab thermometers in there, one wet bulb, dry bulb. Humidity spiked like crazy around day 11 because we got a lot of rain and I couldn't control it at all, even with the AC on. That's all I can figure that would have killed them. I candled on day 22 and there was one chick alive and moving, but it never pipped. If I'd had two I would have helped them out, but I'm not going to raise a single chick with no buddies. I totally want to throw this thing into Coyote Creek. :(

Traci, I'm really sorry to hear that. My friend had the same experience a couple of weeks ago. 48 eggs and not one hatched. It's heartbreaking. Hopefully, it will turn out better next time around.

now kass, i am just plain hot lookin!! just read my avatar!!!!!!

I was raised to believe none of what you read (hear) and only half of what you see!

I'm not too upset about mine because I have other birds out of that cock, but I had some from a different line entirely that a friend mailed me all the way from Tennessee. I guess I'll have to get some from her in December if she shows up for the Shawnee show.

I took some pictures of Samson and Delilah's babies And the Blues from Bo Garrett....

Samson and Delilah came from Carl. He is the Lavendar roo and she is the blue hen These hatched 4/18

This is Chick 1 and I think it will be a roo. It has one black feather on its wing.

Chick 2 is smaller and has a very light lavendar hue all over and a few darker feathers...may be a splash pullet

And chick 3 is darker and while there are feathers on the middle toe, they aren't quite as full as the siblings..

And then these are the babies from Bo Garrett's Blue Cochins. Bo, you'll have to tell me what you think. They hatched 4/30

Not sure the variety on this one....black with white feathers.... 2 pictures. Could this one be mottled blue?

Then Red counting noses on the Garrett Cochins and a few older chicks. Some of these are going to be almost navy blue...

Rebecca...there will definitely be some roos in this bunch....remember, I promised you one.

Yep, the chicks with the large abdomens are cockerels this is a distinctive feature at this age and typically the best way to tell sex short of vent sexing when they are very young. The blues seem to have good dark color which is what you want in a show bird and the leg color is good and yellow which is what I have bred for as well. When they get older they'll have very broad heads and bodies, most of mine look like feather legged cornish right now with the wide heart shaped bodies and meaty heads. Give'em pleny of room to keep them from picking on and killing each other as this is a problem in slow feathering breeds such as cochins. Red lights work wonders in stopping cannibalism. The first chick you have pictured looks white. I have a black male mated to a very nicely colored blue hen and oddly about 50% of their chicks have been white (not splash), goofy green legs though. They look well cared for and growing well, keep up the great work!

Blessings,

Bo

They are adorable. I am farming out eggs all over the place. Seriously. I have two broodies on eggs, I have eggs in an incubator in Dallas. I'm trying like crazy to build up this year because the last two years have been disappointing as anything. For once I want to end up with more birds than I started with.
MacGuyver,
I don't know where in central OK. you are but if you have fertile eggs I can hatch them. I am well into the thousands this year, if you need more bring me the eggs you really want hatched, if they are fertile I can hatch them, if there is a problem with the eggs or the breeders I will help you fix the problem. But first we need to know the problem, I can help with that.

Medfordz,
I appologize but I have several pens I need to go through and have not had time, I will have to catch up with you another day.

Okieridge,
I appreciate the offer to transport the birds to Jim but I need to sort through several pens the more I look I more I need to get rid of..

The problem is that I have a stupid crappy LG styrofoam incubator that hates eggs. I don't think the problem is the eggs or the breeders. I just threw away a whole bunch of perfectly developed chicks that just died in the shells. :( I'm in Oklahoma City.

Oh, L-rd, help my bleedin' heart. I went in to steel myself to throw away all the eggs and turn off my incubator. One had pipped. It's peeping its little head off like crazy in there. Day 25. What. The. Heck? I threw away the dead eggs and upped the humidity again for the little one and we'll see what happens.
