***OKIES in the BYC III ***

They were the big bark nuggets. They get shoved around and I have to rake them around every few days if I want them back where they're supposed to be, had to do the same with straw. Th bark nuggets are a pain to walk on, I don't like that at all. I started using cypress mulch a week or 2 ago and while it still needs raked back (cuz the babies dig like little backhoes) I like it a lot better and it's tons easier to walk on. Straw is nice if you've got covered pens but it turns into mush if you don't, same with pine shavings. I'm liking the mulch a lot. And cypress won't mold and will just press down into the ground so you can add more on top. I know what you're going through-keeping them in pens became such high maintenance when it rained that's the reason I opted for the extra expense of just building yards for each little group. If you can find actual wood chips instead of the big bark nuggets go for it. That would be perfect.

Well if hubby could find a chipper we would have lots of wood chips to use! LOL We are building yards, the 3 pens on the west end of the coop row will have one to share and then the other 7 pens will share a large yard, I figure I will just rotate who gets to spend time out there. Then the new pens will all have yards even if they are just the 2x4 wire without tops that I can sit outside and watch the birds while they spend time outside. I need to get some poultry netting to cover the tops of the runs we are building. Wish I could afford the electric poultry netting.

I am darn tired trying to do two coops at the same time and keep up with the rest of life. I have my new one half constructed today. Think im gonna make this one the cochin castle. Kinda excited bout it. Got moms door put on so all that is left is to fence her run and get the latch for the door. Then one coop will be done. The bad part of my day. Boy found where i hid some hatching eggs. Sister left him in the garage while i was building. Went to take nails out of boards and found him stomping in yolks telling me egg broke! I really wanted those blue gold laced cochins to darn it. This is the first time iv ever cryed over broken eggs. cathie the chicks are doing great found some homes and have kept a few for my self.

The girls & I had a big day @ the farmers market. We are exhausted, poor girls are asking if they can get something to eat & go to bed. They don't want to wait on dad for a cooked dinner. Think we may need to plan crockpot meals for market days. Green beans were by far the best seller & of course everyone that had tomatoes of any kind sold out early!

Thanks for the info on the games, think one is still looking a little blue & the others are mostly black. We moved them this afternoon along with the NN- Madagascar cross. I will keep an eye on them & watch for any issues. If I just release them to free range 100% will they come after each other or each find there own territory to rule?

I think I am moving my ducks to one of the gqf brooders tomorrow. Been cleaning the box twice a day since they are in the house. Last night I cleaned the box & an hour later DH walks by & says remind me why you wanted ducks? They are just nasty! Imagine if I wasnt working so hard to keep there box clean! Or if we had more than 12 ducks. Oh my!
We will NEVER brood as many ducks as we do keets or chicks. I would loose my mind for sure!

Glad your day at the market was a success.

I've been working on the garden stuff today. I got 13 quart bags stuffed full of zuchini spaghetti, and now I'm working on making pattypan squash candy. I need to work on some green beans too.

Canners can I water bath can tomatoes, I seem to remember that they are acid enough to do that, what if I make it into a sauce w/ onions and squash can it still be hot water bath canned?

The chickie doos like the innards of squash almost as much as dubias!!!!! The adult chickens like it to but not nearly like the chickie doos.
