***OKIES in the BYC III ***

I kept one remaining Self-blue, (Lavender) hen from my foundation birds just in case something happens. I moved my SQ Black roo, that I was breeding her to, out of the pen and have 6, 10 week-old Self-blues in with her now. They are her "grandchildren". Early this morning when I gave every pen some sunflower treats the roo in each pen called his girls over to the food. The Self-blue hen started clucking to call the youngsters in her pen over to the treats. She is acting like their mom even though they were well started before they joined her.

I love chickens, especially hens.

broody hen attracks roo with one lil call. I just wanted to get my eggs gave her a pet on the back she tried to give me a peck on the hand. Seeing this i moved her off the nest by tail feathers. Then she lets out a cluck and along comes chillie. he was a bit puffed up so he got moved as well. Silly roo starting to get a lil bold and mama's not gonna take it.

The fermenting oats (grains) thing. I also scoop out w/ a collander from wally world, but ferment 50 # bags at a time in a plastic trash can. I keep the same ferment water and just add to it as needed (always when I put a new bag of grain in) it can even hold two bags actually. I've been doing this for about a year. They love the grains. I tried fermenting thier pellets, they didn't like the mush to much and I didn't like the hassle. Grains drain well mush not so much.

This was my project for the weekend! Its one of my chicken nesting "buckets". I thought Id share with you al and see what you all thought! I know some of you are thinking, "arent the chickens going to peck off the rhinestones?" No, I made sure they were on their really well, and they havent been able to get them off yet! Let me know what you guys think! HOPE EVERYONE HAD A GREAT WEEKEND!

I won't let my hens see that - they will want some too.

I have always wanted a German Shepard but wonder how they are with Chickens. Does it depend on their training?

Yes, you have to teach the dog that the chickens are our family too, so we have to protect them. My GSD, will still try to play with them from time to time. when she was a small puppy, she accidentally killed one. She had tried to play with it, and didnt realize how fragile it was. Well, after the whole thing, she understood how upset it made me and you could tell that she felt HORRIBLY bad for what she did. You just have to teach them that the chickens are part of the family.
