***OKIES in the BYC III ***

When I know my birds are roosting in the trees the last thing I would do is look up!

Heh, I wasn't directly in the line of fire, so to speak. :)

I could use some help! A friend of mine`s daughter rescued two baby bunnies.....They were mowing the pasture next to the school, the mother ran off and left these two cute things, she aint coming back! What I need is advice on how to keep these little things alive or hand them off to somebody who can. Let me know here or call me at 918-366-0326 thanks!

Sadly without their mom they will die unfortunately they cannot survive in captivity for some reason there is something they eat in the wild that we cannot give them so no matter how hard you try they will die in the end. Been there done that bought the t-shirt my kids were very sad about it too.

Been a rough morning here. One of our goats was found dead about 7. Checked the others over & a few were very bloated (since they had not eaten yet, they are usually slim looking in the AM). 2 had direha then within an hour another did. Goat #3 Carmel barely look bloated at first. Within 2 hours of discovery she had trippled in size & died. We were holding her & trying to give her meds when she went down. It was awful. Bambie isn't showing any symptoms of bloating & is eating & drinking well. we put her in a pen alone & she is screaming about it for hours now. Blizzard has burped multiple times which made me feel better. Still haven't had alot of response out of sky. I began to think about the nitrates. with the dry ground I imagine the nitrates in my pasture are climbing. Scared us allowing them to forage is what killed them. Of course DH is out on a range, but promises he will be home tonight. Us girls are filthy & gross after several hours of holding & massaging the goats while trying to treat them with goat bloat. We came in to wash up grab a bite to eat then going back out to tend to them some more.

I am not certain I have a nitrate issue, but told the kids goats only get hay & goat feed until futher notice. They are not to come out of there cage.

i have always wanted to rehome a few, after reading about them and doing some portraits of those in the UK, they need special diets and sometimes that is permanant, depends on each one's unique situation- got me started on a subject dear to my heart... this is Muriel- a rescue in the UK

True it will not be as fast to catch but the tin is very thin and heat goes through it and ignites the wood underneith. Remember, trailer houses are fully encased in tin and look how fast they go up. Plus the paint on the surface burns very good as well. I imagine the nails or screws used to secure the roof conducts heat deep into the wood below, like putting a nail into a baked potato to make them cook faster.

Some of the tin roofs that I see installed also have foam insulation installed between furring strips used to hold the nails, very flamable as well.

A good point that they brought up last night on the news was that once the electricity went out those with a well had no water. Another good reason for a generator, even a small one that could be tucked inside a well house to run the pump/
Oh I know we aren't 100% safe but that metal roof is sure alot better than the shingles we had, lol. We do have the generator on stand by for the well. The upside to our house is that we are right across the street from the water fill station for the local fire depts. They fill from a spring fed pond across the street. It is funny to see a water hydrant out in the middle of no mans land! LOL We joke it is our one piece of civilization out here.

Les, Teva's going to be so worn out by the time she gets off work. The mental strain would really get to me trying to organize the impossible. Good thing she's female, men have a rough time pulling off the organizational tasks

Mike, the little OEGB mix *lived* in one of those live traps? The poor little thing.
Robin, those darling little Silkies make me want to hatch out some of my Silkie's eggs! I've got 2 Cochin/Ameraucana & 2 Faverolles/Orloff eggs in the incubator now. I've been wanting to hatch those mixes out for a long long time & never have. My daughter hatched out (against my wishes) a Cuckoo Marans/Orloff mix a few months ago that's gorgeous! He's the black and white barred of the cuckoo Marans with brown splotches mixed in all over. I'm really anxious to see what a Faverolles/Orloff mix looks like and I figured I can find a place here for all 4 if they happen to all hatch.
check this one out, from captain the cochin and staypuff

Oh no!!! I hope it doesn't get any worse. That is sad that you can't let them out to graze till thier hearts content but you have to do what is best for them. Things usually go wrong at our house when hubby is gone as well, it is like everything waits until he is working out of town for a few days to go down hill. Praying it gets better at your place.

Christina, do your goats get their CD&T vaccines? Bloat always scared me to death when I had all my pet goats and sheep. You probably know, but CD&T is for one of the more common "bloat bacterias" (or whatever it's called). A lot of the goat and sheep people also would give them free choice access to baking soda 24/7.
I'm so sorry. I certainly do know how hard it is to sit there and hold a dying goat (and pet sheep) and not know what else to do. I feel really bad for your girls.

Staypuff's the white Silkie, right? What color is Captain? That's a cool looking chicken in the picture, it's barred.
As soon as my Crele OEGB can't manage to get the job done with the Silkie girl he's in with I'm wanting a mix from those 2 also. Just 1 :)

Wow. So sorry, jcat. We lost two of our favorites, including our beloved Tripod, earlier this year to bloat. They had all just been allowed out into the larger pasture in back. I decided then I didn't know enough about goats to keep them yet, so sold most of the rest of the herd through Michael.
