***OKIES in the BYC III ***

We switched our coop to sand and so far I'm loving it! I just scoop it with a cat litter scooper but will make a bigger scoop pretty soon. It only took me 5-10 minutes to clean it. I think it's a much neater appearance. My silkies were NOT happy at first. Sandy refused to step on it for almost a whole day because she's so stubborn. Funny that the one named Sandy hates the sand. I let the girls free range while I was out there and she wouldn't come out. I also hung some lights on a timer so they come on around 5AM so they will have a little more "daylight". Found a home for our baby Frizzle so he's leaving us tomorrow, that's bitter sweet. We sure enjoy him.

I've been enjoying this weather and getting a lot done but oh man, my allergies are going crazy! I feel like my heads going to explode!

I've enjoyed all the pictures and the stories about hatchings!

I've never had a bossy Silkie hen so I think that's probably not the norm. If another Silkie finds its way to your family then so be it, it was meant to be.
Kavellion, your Fav boys are beautiful! I'm thinking I'll probably end up making my older Faverolles boy a 4x8 pen under a roofed area in his girls yard, maybe let him out with the girls only once a week or for a few hours a day or something. He's just far too armorous for the girls. They don't even want to come out of their shed in the morning because he runs out 1st and is standing there waiting for early morning romps like it's his right as a male or something. I adore him though and he's such an excellent tempered boy.
Cathie, I'm so sorry about Kurt's D'Uccle. It's hard for ME to lose my pet birds, I know full well how hard it must be for Kurt. He puts so much time and care into his birds.
I have 4 *Bantam* Faverolles girls who religiously lay an egg a day, they're in with this gorgeous Blue Salmon male. The Bantams Favs only get about 2 lbs and I'd love to save you or one of your kids some eggs to hatch from them if you like Favs lol Super sweet tempered birds, gentle and docile like Cochins. And the Bantams would be easy keepers and not take up much room. You'd never even know they were there

. Here's a picture of the Blue Salmon boy and his girls. You know you want some! They can be your Halloween hatch, you can name them after the people in the Adam's Family haha!
Oh how did I know Mitzi the enabler would be along to encourage me, lol. I might have to take you up on eggs (I mean they don't count until they crow or lay eggs right? haha! Can you sex them at hatch? That might make it easier if I could keep like 4-6 girls and one roo (I mean hey I do have that 10x20 pen that is empty,

.
you can never go wrong with faveroles, mitzi's roo just needs some more girls!! mine are just beginnng to lay and are bantams- its mitzi's fault i fell in love with them! between her and betsy i am a lost cause!
Tony- so with muskovy's can you just let them roam then i they sleep in the trees?
You can sex them when their secondary feathers start growing in about 2 wks. 10x20 is tons of room, mine are in a 10x10 with a 4x4 coop. I keep wanting to build them a run to go with it but haven't gotten it done yet.
Haha, Robin! It's payback for giving me this Blue Cochin bantam who hid under the shed and emerged with 10 mixed breed babies lol! Dang, they're cute. Even though all I can see is a bunch of roosters who'll someday need separated :)

I didn't lug my camera outside, but a few of the leghorns appear fully feathered & some even have their combs standing most of the way up! Amazing what environment can do to an animal.

Earlier this wk we moved the momma hens away from the guineas they hatched. My favorite roo has now taken on the care taker role. He talks & they come running. The keets are spending the entire day following behind the roo.

Anyone see the new PETA ad on the news??? Will make you laugh out loud I promise!!! Couldn't paste it here with my phone, but it sure is funny.

Hi Okies,

I'm online to catch up, but my "to grade" stack is bossing me around, so I won't be able to stay long. I feel like I'm on fast-forward during the week, and on weekends my days drop back into normal speed. Maybe this weekend I can sit in the grass and let my free-range group tell me all about the wonderful weather we're having. 30 more rough drafts to grade

I'd better get a few finished so I don't lose my momentum.

We have about five acres, and we got an estimate for chain link fencing. The guy wanted $15K! I want to do it cheaper with another kind of fencing, but the OKC laws are strict about what kind of fence you can have. It makes me really grumpy because there are loads of fences out here that don't meet the legal requirements, but I'm scared if we just put up fencing someone will complain and we'll owe a fine or something.
Are you in a division with rules? 5 acres should provide you with more flexibility...especially since you have farm animals..poultry. Pipe and cable....privacy panels....barbed wire...chain link. I'd call the city and find out for sure. You might be able to get a permit for a variance for a different fencing. And you are handy enough to do some of the fencing yourself. Chain link is often sold on craigslist. Quickcrete and some pipe.

I soooo remember those days. I feel for you.

Mowed the grass today...seems a shame when we need grass so bad for the cattle. But the flock was out free-ranging and they were chasing the grasshoppers stirred up by the mower. I had to watch out and remow some sections avoiding hitting a intent hen or two.

ahhh, poop!

Something got one of my EE pullets the other day and today my big Black Australorp Roo has been taken, dang. We found a pile of feathers and I couldn't find him all the girls were up under my truck and then we went out on the wheelers and found another pile of his feathers.

My son was riding his wheeler last week and said he came up on a group of dogs out on the back of the property. He said they all ran off. I wonder if they're taking my chickens!

It seems that you have 5 acres that the codes would have some variances than a city lot. Do you live in a addition or rural area.
There sure are a lot peeps out there that are breaking the law on the outer edges of the OKC city limits if that is the law.
