***OKIES in the BYC III ***

I don't show them. The only job mine have is making it to the feed buckets :)
I know, I just love how roos look with their longer feathers and cool colors. Most the problem with boys (I think) is overbreeding the girls, that's what I'm always afraid of. I just hate my precious girls being treated like a piece of meat by the boys lol!

I don't think so, Kass. I need to go look up the BBR color and see when you can start seeing differences. I know with my Silver Phoenix I thought I had all girls until they were like 3 months old when the boy's comb started getting noticeably bigger and redder. They're so gentle natured though. I had gotten my 4 Silvers at Newcastle auction the same night I got 5 tiny Cochins from MJ at the same place. I think they were exposed to something that night because I lost them all one by one, then a snake got the very last Cochin. I do still have the Silver Duckwing Phoenix girl, she's a doll. Loooooves everyone and everything. I just lost the male 3 wks ago and she still acts lost. Problem is after losing so many in that group I'm scared to put her with these new Phoenix once they're older. I have so dang many Araucana & Ameraucana boys though that I may have to just risk it and put her with one of them.
Dang, I type too much :-D

Hi all, I been slackin and surfin on here, welcome to all the new comers, love all the pics, love the chick pics! I went out the other morning on the back porch and we have a bush about 15 feet from the porch by the house, had some sparrows in it and they all of a sudden started chirping loudly and raisin a ruckus, I looked and right above them on the roof was a Red tail Hawk, I tried to get a pic of him but my phone won't adjust the focus so you can't really tell what he was in the pic, it surprised me, I knew we had a few pair around but have not seen them so close before, when I snapped the pic it flew of and the sparrows quieted down!!! Also any of you Gamefowl Breeders in the area, I am looking for some Brassyback Butchers or Brassyback Albanys, they need to be pure blood and game, PM me or drop me a note at [email protected] or on my FB page (Lynn Scrogum) if you have some or know anyone close that has some. Thanks, Lynn

Our egg production went up for a few days when it cooled off but we are averaging a dz a day--- was 3 dz a day before the heat wave.

DH has 10 days left before he picks up his new trainees, so he has been working hard on the honey do list. We were trying to decide if we should more the swamp cooler out of the chicken coop or just cover it inside the coop. Since it hasn't been running the chickens are now roosting on top of the cooler.

DH is asking about planting something inside one of the goat pens for them to forage. Both the lens are in the wooded area, so I am not sure what well grow well. We let them out a few hours a day and they forage freely, but of course their pens are void of most greenery -- they only leave behind the stuff that doesn't taste good.

Erin I know it's hard to wait!!!! The land next to us is rumored to hit the market when the owner passes away & he is in bad health--- but its 80 acres so imagine price will be out of reach! I just hope if it goes up for sale it is only purchased for pasture. We enjoy not having neighbors.
Not sure if you have looked a land loans, we went with Chisholm farm credit-- think we had to have 20 or 25% down & they did a 15yr note. That was 2 yrs ago so things could have changed. It was a hard decision to take out a loan for the land, but we feel in love with the land & wouldn't have had enough cash to do improvements & put the trailer out here without some kind of financing. We are on track to pay it off this yr so I don't regret it one bit!! I did work for a yr prior to us moving out here, so that helped us reach our goals. I don't think DH or I realized how expensive farm life would be!

Mitzi if you hatch out a bunch of Roos they should be WAY easy to rehome!!! I think an incubator was the most dangerous thing you could have ever bought!!!!

Our egg count went up with the cooler weather, and the pullets began laying so we are donating the extra eggs to the senior center- they love it...

Brag time....LOL!!! I'be in the October/November issue of Backyard Poultry magazine? Pages 68 and 69! :) An article explaining how chickens are influencing my art! I haven't seen it yet, so i hope its a decent article...LOL!

yup, bators are really dangerous, i am afraid to set more, don't need more roos! BUT....bantam favorolles are calling my name......

My brother posted this pic on FB for me, it was to cute not to repost. Wish the preditors in my area felt this way about chicken.

Glad you think so-in case I get all 5 boys I'll hit you up to see if you want one

Just kidding!
Here's the 1st 2 just now. I swore I wouldn't post any more blurry 1/2 wet baby chick pictures but I can't help it! 2 more are pipped and working at it. I'll be way impressed yet again with my Brinsea if all 5 hatch. They're sure strong active little buggers. It's always a good sign when they're trying to eat pieces of their broken eggshell before they're even all the way out of it lol

D'awwwww!

Congratulations!!! That's awesome! Did you have to fill something out? And how do we get a copy???
Christina, I have an all or nothing personality. So yes-the incubators have been the end of me :) But I don't hatch out the numbers most people do, I just hatch a whole lot of 4 and 5 chick hatches.
