A couple of my Cochin girls have been sitting on eggs. I couldn't get them to stop brooding so I gave them each a few eggs to hatch. I had two hatch earlier this week and thought that by now surely the rest were no good and planned to pulll them all tomorrow.
Today, I had a little extra time befor I left for work so I went down to the pens to hang out with the birds. i heard one peep and thought it was from a sparrow in the trees near by but I checked the coop. There was one chick in a corner of the nest box. The hen was in the opposite corner of the box sitting on two remaining eggs and the poor chick was cold. I took it in the house to try to warm it up, gave it some water and held it on a heating pad on low. I had to leave for work so it only got 15 minutes on the heat and I put it in the brooder with my two other Cochin chicks and the 8 Ameraucans I am brooding for Jack.. I wasn't hopeful but it was up and running around with the rest when I got home! Yeah!
Al my young birds that are outside now are over 8 weeks old. Do you think the cold snap will affect them? I think I will get some straw tomorrow and give them all some extra bedding though almost all of them roost,. Many of them have been roosing on roosts outside of their coops since this Summer. I have had chickens 3 years now but I still fuss over them like an old hen. I gave them all vitamins in their water early this week and have been giving them more scratch and sunflower seeds.
